To be fair, I myself think the references aren't done properly.
Especially given that it's a fictional world, having these type of jokes don't make in-world sense. That's why I actually think that I should go back and re-write them, or at the very least, tie them into in-world occurrences and justification, instead of making the audience depend on external knowledge. That way the story will have more merit and be more accessible, I feel.

Forgive the wall of text! If I may make a comment, I am somewhat surprised that you glaze over anime, especially given the 'light novel' themed nature of the competition, and its parallels with anime.
Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I'm just curious as to your stance on the topic, especially given that your story is devoid of a lot of the tropes in that medium.
