Darren thinks very much his age (that is, of a teenage boy) but his actions/ambitions are very mature which allows for his more immature moments to be taken with more grace and humor I think.
I also thought it was funny how the Shelly vaped rather than chewed actual bubble gum. Besides the absurity of doing that in front of a student I thought it was a clever take on the classic "blowing bubble gum" to show nonchlance. I'm not sure if that's what you intended but it was clever nonetheless. ^^
