This kind of reminds me of a shitty $0 budget visual novel I played ages ago in which the deliquent lazy but smart girl fell off the stairs and got the ability to read minds as well. Her parents always seemed nice to her, but once she read minds she realized they were assholes x_x imagine realizing your loved ones don't really love you back against your will. That must SUCK. Not saying that's necessarily what's happening here, though, just kind of made me think about that.

I'm leaning towards the 'narration is like this because mc is like this' theory now
pulling off compelling detached protagonists is kind of tricky because it might mean others move the story for him (such as this case) but it's not necessarily a negative, just swimming against the tides so to say
but to go against the current can too be rewarding :P

I think the point is also that the protagonist is detached and that explains the narration style, but it still takes me out of the story sometimes
it's like this man's making fun of himself and his life and everyone around him but not really? but maybe? idk
