That is a perfectly valid critique given how it reads, and I won’t knock it. However, consider this:
The Songbird is a woman that potentially knows him very well, him being Jiro. She invites him and the others to see a production that she both wrote herself and acted in, under the pretenses that she had something important to tell Jiro. (the lead roles are literally Roji and Fuyu lol) so you’re correct that it’s heavy handed. However, she goes through the process of explaining the symbolism not to talk down to the audience per se but to get it through our boneheaded protagonists head in a way that he can understand. I know how capable my readers are since they’ve uncovered most of my planned reveals already.
