The perfect song came on just as I pulled up this chapter “A Pall most murderous” from the Shadowbringers OST, ironically enough it was a battlefield dungeon too 😎 This is Jessie’s first confirmed kill, is it not? This is war, indeed. But beautifully handled all around this chapter, love the scene you set.

First off, I really appreciate the nice and detailed review. It’s been a pleasure to see you in the comments section, and it’s been something I looked forward to every time I posted for your valuable insights. Sometimes it’s just nice to see *what* resonates with readers as far as my creative choices go, whether or not I can surprise people with certain twists. And I’m certainly going to miss this cast. The emotions hit me this morning, well after I had posted. 🥲

Now, addressing your comment, I had done preliminary research into what the soul actually is, but I ultimately left a deep exploration of the concept off the table because it inevitably crosses into the realm of faith and magic and I wanted to lean heavier on the science side. But—I found it interesting that studies of what a digital afterlife could look like already exist and the main thing they grapple with is whether the digital version is simply a “second self” because with our current understanding of the human experience, there would be no real way to transmigrate digitally. It goes back to philosophy. What is a person? Is it the neuron’s firing in their brain, or is it more? Maybe I’ll write another story exploring this one day.

The main consequence of having no soul is that you aren’t the other person. You’d basically be dealing with the same crisis of identity that a clone would if that makes sense. I think Alicization covered a similar idea. In any case, thank you for reading!

What a road this was, just to be able to write and finish a 75k word novel in the timeframe. In the last 12 days, I’ve written over 27k of that. No backlog, no outlining, and a conclusion I could still be proud of. ✨

I’ll be honest, I felt a tad bit emotional writing this chapter, even though it’s likely the shortest chapter in the whole book. 🥲 She was probably my favorite design of any character I’ve written, and she will be missed by all.
