This was worth the binge. Admittedly, the main reason behind the binge was the fact that the chapters were being rewritten, so I decided to read through to the end so I could read the original story. Speaking of the rewritten chapters, I'll probably binge read them once they're all up.

Now for my thoughts on the story. It was really good. When I first read the synopsis and chapter 1, I thought this would be a lighthearted magical girl story. Never did I expect it would go from magical girl hunting to Shin Megami Tensei/Persona.

The characters easily were one of the big highlights of the story. I think the twist that Shin assumed the identity of Sora due to witness protection was a clever idea. The meanings behind the characters names though was perhaps the thing I liked the most. Even though the meanings behind the character's names aren't technically stated within the story itself, I do consider the meanings behind the names part of the story.

Overall, I felt the story wrapped up nicely with potential for a sequel. The only thing I'm still curious about is the cover itself. Is the person on it Sora/Shin or someone else? Other than that, I enjoyed the story and look forward to binging to rewrite once it's completed.

Author's Commentary #13:

Time to talk about Chapter 13: Bianka's grudge.
This chapter offers the first insight both on what kind of person Fujiko is, and on the incident that changed Mochi. Now let's talk a bit more about Fujiko.

As shown in this chapter, Fujiko is crazy. Yumeko isn't much better either, and the only reason they can do as they please is because their father is deputy prime minister. Yes, despite resigning, Fujiko and Yumeko's father was able to become a politician and work his way up to being deputy prime minister. As for who ended up replacing him as superintendent general, that will remain a mystery.

One thing that is certain though is that Fujiko is heading straight for Madoka. Looks like these two will be having a confrontation.

Author's Commentary #21:

Time to talk about Chapter 21: Biting off more than you can chew.
While the chapter itself has minimal differences between it and the original, I feel the events in the remake helped enhance this chapter. Now its clearer why Rika decided to rope Sundae in and why Helga's more curious about Mimi.

Speaking of which, Sundae actually attended Tabemono around the same time Himawari did. While they were a grade apart, the two hated each other and developed a vicious rivalry.

This chapter also offers a taste of the enemies that will be attending the banquet. I'll go a bit more in depth on them once they're all revealed. Funnily enough, there are two major video game references in this chapter. One is a Metal gear reference and the other could be considered a Zelda reference, though funnily enough, I was actually thinking of Smash bros when I thought to make the reference. As for what they are, Metal gear is nanomachines, and Zelda/Smash bros is throwing bombs in the enemy's mouth.

One final thing I'll talk about is the off-screen cook-off between Helga and Rika. Since Helga had already been beaten soundly before, I felt it was best to just skip over the battle so that the story could get to the banquet faster. Speaking of which, the next chapter will be the start of the banquet. Let's hope Sundae fully cooperates and doesn't betray the team.

So it turns out the sister was with the resistance. The wedding scene was really good, and I'm glad the resistance was able to save Ekko and the MC.

Since this is the end of the volume, I'll give my thoughts on the series. The plot of the story truly hooked me in and kept me on the edge of my seat to find out what would happen. My only critique would be that I feel there should have been a scene properly showcasing what happens to someone that is off their pills. While there was a scene with the hermit at the beginning, and that scene is fine as is, I think having a scene where a student is dragged away for being caught off their pills would not only show what could happen if the main characters get caught, but also that others would be far more willing to report irregularities in behavior compared to the main cast. Even without this though, the story is still really good.

Since there's going to be a volume 2, I assume that's going to be where all the questions regarding the world are going to be answered. I look forward to reading it.

Author's Commentary #12:

Time to talk about Chapter 12: Conspiracy.
Turns out, Purin is really corrupt. I wasn't able to properly showcase just how bad she is here, however in Spice of life, her corruption is on full display. In fact, the Spice of life remake will properly showcase the corruption of Purin and her friends. As for how they were all able to get away with things, the key lies in Yumeko.

Since she was the superintendent general's daughter, she was able to not only get a high-ranking position, but also get her friends benefits as well. However, after Reika managed to arrest her and make her arrest public, the superintendent general had no choice but to charge her with the crime she was accused of in order to save face. After Fujiko's arrest two years later though, he was forced to resign. Despite that, he ended up escaping to politics and became a member of the Diet thanks in no small part to his corrupt buddies. He actually isn't with Illumous, but is corrupt nonetheless. Yumeko and her friends, however remains to be seen. Speaking of which, let's give some brief bios on Kurobane, Kaori, and Purin. First up is Kurobane.

黒羽根諄 (Kurobane Makoto) is how her name is written in kanji. Her first name, 諄, means "dull", while 黒羽根 means "black", "feather", and "foundation".

Her birthday is May 20th which she shares with Sae Chabashira from Classroom of the elite. The reason for that being that Chabashira was the main inspiration for her character.

Next up is Kaori. 猪原果桜梨 (Inohara Kaori) is how her name is written in kanji. 果桜梨 means "result", "cherry blossom", and "pear", while 猪原 means "boar" and "origin".

Her birthday is August 15th which she shares with Camie Utsushimi from My Hero Academia. The reason for this is because Kaori was loosely based off Camie.

Finally, there's Purin. 名智符凜 (Myouchi Purin) is how her name is spelled in kanji. 符凜 means "token" and "coldness". Purin is also the Japanese word for pudding.

Her birthday is January 23rd which is international sticky toffee pudding day. This is fitting since sticky toffee pudding, along with regular custard pudding, is her favorite food.

Oh boy, it looks like they're going to get caught. Though I feel like the truth of this world is about to come to light. I definitely think the MC's sister is with the group trying to free everyone. Her brief emotional outburst at the end kind of confirms that at the least, she's off her pills and can feel emotion.

Guess I was wrong with my theory. I thought the old man would be killed off and lead to Ekko setting her plan in motion. Also, she's a bit more manipulative than I thought, though I guess this was foreshadowed back when she confronted the teacher.

This was a really good chapter. I really like how you clarified that in this world, those at the top don't follow the rules. It truly makes the world all the more dystopian. To be honest, this world kind of reminds me of the world in KamiKatsu, though without the villages of outcasts and bad CGI monsters.

Ekko's backstory is honestly feeling like it could have been a novel in of itself, though since you mentioned the backstory will be short, I have a feeling that it will end in the next few chapters, presumably with the old man being killed off and Ekko swearing to change the world for the better.

Author's Commentary #20:

Time to talk about Chapter 20: World's worst negotiator.
Himawari really is starting to look more like a joke character, but trust me, she can be serious when it counts.

As for Noveau Neo, they're a reference to Noir from Shokugeki no Soma. The girl being used as a food platter idea was actually inspired by Hareluya II Boy, though. In fact, I'd argue Hareluya II Boy served as more of an inspiration for this upcoming arc than Shokugeki no Soma.

Speaking of which, this marks the proper start of the underworld banquet arc. It also seems like Helga's going to be roped into this as well. Her involvement in this arc is actually another reason I decided to write the Mimi cook-off chapters before this in the remake.

Author's Commentary #19:

Time to talk about Chapter 19: Interrogation.
Masaru's older sister, Himawari, has made her debut in the remake at last. The idea for Himawari came about after I wondered what would happen in Shokugeki no Soma if a sibling of one of the chefs got expelled and decided to rise to the top in a career separate from cooking. As such, I decided that Himawari would rise to the top as a police officer. She's actually really talented and has already managed to become a superintendent despite only being 25 years old.

力丸向日葵 (Rikumaru Himawari) is how her name is written in kanji.
向日葵 means "direction", "sun", and "hollyhock".
Her surname, 力丸, means "strength" and "perfection". She actually chose this surname for herself after being expelled and subsequently disowned by her family.

Her birthday is September 23rd which is ironically, national great American pot pie day.

To add even further irony, chicken pot pies used to be her favorite food before her expulsion caused her to suffer PTSD whenever she lays eyes on one. As such, her new favorite food is nattō.

Himawari might have been driven off today, but this won't be the last we'll see of her. Far from it in fact. I actually had much bigger plans for her character in the original, but was unable to bring them to fruition there. Here however, my original vision and plans for Himawari will be showcased, so look forward to that.

Speaking of which, the next few arcs will be similar to the original, pacing wise. While they are similar in content as well, there are notable differences.

Author's Commentary #11:

Time to talk about Chapter 11: Museum of mummies Part 4.
And with that, the Museum of mummies arc is over. As I hinted at in the previous commentary, the girls ended up escaping by using the sarcophagus as a make-shift bobsled.

This part actually had a lot of changes from the initial draft. Though they all tended to center on the characters that would arrive to save everyone after the serum kicked in. First off, this was originally going to be where Serika would debut in the story. She was also going to be far friendlier than she is now.

The second major change was having Purin and Mutsumi show up. In the first published version of this chapter in the original, which has since been edited out, only Kaori was going to appear. However, upon taking a closer look while planning out the rewrite, I decided Mutsumi needed to appear and be the one to escort everyone back to the station once they were given the antidote for the immobilization serum. As such, I also felt that it would be better to introduce Purin here. As for why Mutsumi needed to be here, I'll elaborate more on that in the next commentary.

Author's Commentary #10:

Time to talk about Chapter 10: Museum of mummies Part 3.
Originally, this and Chapter 9 were one big chapter, but I decided to split it up. The main reason for that being that I felt splitting up the chapters helped build more suspense.

As for Madoka and co, looks like they're going surfing on a sarcophagus, or perhaps bobsledding, assuming they can do something about Mochi.

One thing I'll briefly touch on is the mysterious woman Madoka encountered. That being that she was originally going to have a much larger role, not just in the arc, but the entire story as well. I'll elaborate more on her when she shows up again.

Speaking of changes from the original draft, this arc was originally going to be where Rika was introduced to the story. Originally, she was going to be kidnapped instead of Emeri as a result of her doing a catering job at the museum. Emeri was also not planned to be introduced until the arc after this, but since I decided to introduce Emeri earlier, I had her get kidnapped in this arc instead of Rika. Funnily enough, Rika actually did get kidnapped while doing a catering job at a museum in Spice of Life, so I guess that idea came to fruition after all.

Author's Commentary #18:

Time to talk about Chapter 18: Rematch.
Mimi has emerged victorious, and humiliated Sundae, or should I say Suika, at her craft. The blind taste test from Chapter 15 also served its purpose by inspiring Helga to have a cook-off based around the judges not knowing who cooked which dish.

This chapter also showcased that Mimi has a good memory. She remembered exactly how Sundae made her sundae and replicated it to the tee. And as a result, surpassed Sundae and got Helga interested in her. Speaking of which, this marks the start of Helga becoming friendlier towards Rika and the others at Ryokoma. Now let's talk a bit about Sundae.

First off, Sundae's real name is actually Suika Nichiyobi. 日曜日スイカ (Nichiyobi Suika) is how her name is written in Japanese, while サンデー (Sundae) is how her nickname would be written.
日曜日 means "Sunday" so her name is a essentially "Watermelon Sunday".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is November 11th, which is national sundae day.

Since sundaes are her favorite food, it's fitting that she chose to make her nickname "Sundae" and have her birthday be national sundae day.
