    Author's Commentary #11:

Time to talk about Chapter 11: Triple Cedar Hotel and Resort.
Now that Triple Cedar Hotel has made it's debut, I feel now is the best time to do a geography lesson on where the series takes place.

The series primarily takes place in Kawaguchi, Saitama. The city is located towards the south east of the Saitama prefecture and borders the Tokyo wards of Kita and Adachi. Lagoon Pathways is located in Mito, Ibaraki, the capital city of the Ibaraki prefecture. I chose to have the hotel be there since the Ibaraki prefecture is known for having the second largest lake in in the country, Lake Kasumigaura, within its borders.

As for Triple Cedar, it is located in Nikko, which is located in the Tochigi prefecture. I chose this location after seeing some pictures of Tochigi and thinking that perfectly captured how I wanted Triple Cedar to be; a hotel surrounded by forests and trees. Following my trip to Nikko though, I decided to revise the image of it. Like with Lagoon pathways, it is based on a hotel I once went to, and is greatly exaggerated compared to its real world inspiration. Initially, I had it located in Tochigi City after seeing a nice panorama shot of the city, but decided Nikko fit better, thanks in no small part to my vacation there. Tochigi City will still play a role in a future arc of the series though. Now let's shift gears and discuss the new characters.

禿 愛 (Kamuro Ai) is how Ai's name would be spelled in kanji. It literally translates to "bald love". Obviously fitting since Ai has a massive bald fetish. But there's more.

Her birthday is October 14th which is Be bald and free day. Yeah, Ai's whole character is bald, bald, BALD! Though I'll talk more about her later when more is revealed about her in the story. All I'll say is she enjoys being bald, shaving women bald, and is attracted to women and strives to form a harem of bald women.

Her favorite piece is the queen, mainly because she views herself as the queen of all women.

執見 美智子 (Azami Michiko) is how Michiko's name is spelled in kanji. Her first name, 美智子, means "beauty", "wisdom", and "thinker", while her last name, 執見, means "take hold of" and "to meet".

    Her birthday is January 25th.

Like Ai, her favorite piece is the queen.

One thing I'll mention about Michiko is that she actually underwent a notable redesign, and now sports a more stylish hair-style that I feel fits her much better than the original. Speaking of redesigns, SPCM Himitsusama, aka Mizuse Niimi, also got a minor redesign in terms of hairstyle.

氷見 卑弥 (Himi Himi) is how Himi's name would be spelled in kanji. 卑弥 means "humble" and "increasingly", while 氷見 means "ice" and "see".

Her birthday is October 7th, which is the day Italian charlatan and con artist, Charles Ponzi, was officially deported from the United States.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

Himi is a brand new character exclusive to the volumes. With Ai's role now being merged with that of a character known as Melisha Kamaleon from the original, Ai's original role in the story is being passed on to Himi.

新美 美都砂 (Niimi Mizuse) is how Mizuse's name is written in kanji. 美都砂 means "beauty", "capital", and "sand" while 新美 means "modern" and "beauty".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is September 9th, which is international beauty day. She also shares this birthday with Yuzuha and Waki from Spice of Life. Funnily enough, this means that September 9th is now the day that has the most number of birthdays for characters created by me, at least for now.

Her favorite piece is the queen, mainly because she believes it is the most beautiful piece on the board.

Mizuse hails from Okinawa and is known as Himitsusama. She's quite skilled at chess and is also the CEO of one of the world's largest women's beauty brands, Mizuse Niimi. She was originally set to appear much later in the story, but I decided to have her appear earlier and have a bigger role in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #8:

Time to talk about Chapter 8: Sick Day.
And here we have another major instance of event shuffling between volume version and original version. This time it's the Nyoan mini-arc from Season 3. Everyone's favorite bald catgirl is back, and this time, she's kidnapping Mimoko and bringing her to Gyro's old hideout.

As soon as I settled on the premise for this chapter, I knew it was going to be a comedic, and it certainly was. It would probably be better if there were drawings showcasing how disgusted Mimoko was when she explored the place, but even without them, I feel the chapter is still a funny one.

As for the game, Nyoan's at it again with the odds matches, though this time the punishment isn't as severe for Mimoko due to the odds, and the fact that no one's trapped in a piece. Ironically enough, Mimoko was forced to ask Daria to call in sick for her due to her being unable to make it to school in time.

Finally, as I stated at the start, this event didn't originally occur this early in the story. It was also split into two chapters, but here I felt it would work better as a single chapter. As for why it now occurs earlier in the story, it's to keep the flow steady as thanks to further revisions in the volume, this is pretty much the only place I could slot in this event with Nyoan. I have nothing but positivity for the move though as it gives us some funny Nyoan action early on, and better serves to build the unlikely bond between her and Mimoko.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #6:

Time to talk about Chapter 6: The ostracized grandmaster.
First, let's talk about the aftermath of Kazuya's failed scheme. Kazuya truly was willing to martyr himself. As for the main reason why, he felt that doing so would truly impress Shion. Shion was also on board with the plan and agreed to help frame the chess club.

However, Kazuya surviving and almost getting arrested ruined the entire plan. After giving their testimonies to the teachers, the chess club was absolved of any involvement in the principal's attempted murder. Shion, however, is now in the hot seat for being considered an accomplice in Kazuya's scheme. As a result, Kazuya has been expelled by the acting principal, with Shion and Kigyoku facing suspension at the bare minimum.

All this is largely thanks to Otona, or rather Okisato telling Otona what to do beforehand. As stated previously in the series, killing someone in a DESPER match won't get you charged for murder. However, since Kazuya kidnapped Utami, he would have been booked on kidnapping and attempted murder charges if Grigori didn't intervene. Despite this, Shion is now under investigation, nor is Kazuya exactly safe as Grigori intends to punish him for his failure.

As for Okisato, he ended up losing the vice-president election in a landslide to Yuusuke. This was largely due to Mimoko turning against him because of him not telling her about the match with Kazuya. Originally, Okisato was going to be the vice-president of the chess club, but after I ended up writing this mini-arc, I felt it would be better to have him become ostracized due to the Kazuya incident and lose to Yuusuke.

However, Okisato doesn't take the loss well and in the revision of this chapter, I decided to showcase one of the games he played against Yuusuke. The game is actually the infamous 9-move mate game that was played between Fabiano Caruana and Alireza Firouzja in the Crunchlabs Masters 2024. In the game, Firouzja ended up falling for what some dub, "the 100 year old trick" which allowed Caruana to achieve a winning position as white. Firouzja resigned after realizing this. Funnily enough, Firouzja ended up bouncing back from the loss and made it to the grand finals of the event. As for why the game is called "the 100 year old trick", that's due to the same rook sacrifice plan being used, albeit in a slightly different way, in a game between Carl Schlechter and Julius Perlis in 1911. I decided to extend the game and show one of the possible ways to mate.

This game was not present in the original version of the chapter when it was first released in Season 2 though. Here in the volume release, it means things are mostly back in line with the most revised edition of Season 2. One difference though is that now Okisato goes home earlier, thus introducing us to Yojiro and Otona proper. Let's do their bios.

田辺 乙那 (Tanabe Otona) is how Otona's name would be spelled in kanji. Her first name, 乙那, means "second" and "beautiful".

Her birthday is November 23rd, which is Labor Thanksgiving Day in Japan.

Thanks to Okisato, she's actually a 600-rated chess player, and as such has a favorite piece; the queen.

Now onto Okisato and Otona's father, Yojiro. At first, he was adamant about Okisato learning shogi as a pastime, but once Okisato became good at chess and showed him the financial benefits of the chess world, he became supportive and helped Okisato to persuade his boss and father-in-law, Okisato's grandfather, to let Okisato pursue chess. The grandfather eventually agreed, and even allowed Okisato to teach his men the game, with he himself ended up becoming second only to Okisato in terms of skill. Yojiro is also decent at the game and bares a rating of 1868. There actually is significance behind his rating since 1868 is actually the first year of the Meiji era.

田辺 与次郎 (Tanabe Yojiro) is how his name is written in kanji. His first name, 与次郎, means "to give", "next", and "man".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Intriguingly enough, Yojiro's birthday is October 23rd which was the first day of the Meiji era back in 1868.

Like his son, he believes the pawn is the most useful piece on and off the board.

Okisato's family won't play as large a role in the greater story as compared to Mimoko's family, but they will become relevant when the history of Okisato's mother is discussed in a future arc.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #5:

Time to talk about Chapter 5: Scam sister.
Now here's where things begin to differ drastically from the original. Turns out that red-haired officer is actually a major character. And not just that, she's debuting far earlier than she did in the original. Back then, Oma debuted in Season 8, long after the final revisions for Season 2 were complete, however, as evidenced by her appearance here, I clearly have big plans for her. Now let's do Oma's bio.

稲敷 小真 (Inashiki Oma) is how Oma's name would be spelled in kanji. 小真 means "small" and "truth", while 稲敷 means "rice" and "spread".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is March 3rd, which she shares with Italian charlatan and con artist, Charles Ponzi.

Her favorite piece would likely be the queen.

Oma reuniting with Daria was completely planned, but not finalized until I myself made an IRL pilgrimage to Kawaguchi and got a better lay of the land. I was actually searching for a place that would work for Chapter 1: An underground chess match of Volume 1, which I actually did find. The location, the Sanryosuimon Memorial Park, also had the perfect setting for where the chess club would have their unofficial meetings. Since the area also contained a school, I decided to base Shogikawa Gakuin off of it, leading to me having most of the major characters live close by in the area.

Getting back to Oma, it turned out that in the area I went to in Kawaguchi, there was a Family Mart close by the riverbank. That along with the perfect riverbank spot made me decide that the location of Mimoko's house would be in that area, right next to the stairs to the riverbank walking path and just a block down from the Family Mart. That made me want to feature Daria going to the location, which in-universe is known as a Famishop. As for what Oma was doing there, it originates from her hearing of Mimoko's exploits. Remember, she is highly intelligent, and may even have a few nasty tricks up her sleeve.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #4:

Time to talk about Chapter 4: Caïssa's blessing.
Caïssa is known as the goddess of chess. As such, I felt I needed to make reference to her in the story, and what better way than via the Caïssa's blessing function of the WWCF card.

As explained in the chapter, this feature prevents holders of it from dying due to unnatural causes as well as preventing permanent or severe injuries from befalling players. For example, Svetlana has it which allows her to function as an invincible one-woman army. As such, she's often tasked by her father to eliminate his foes as Caïssa's blessing prevents weapons from harming her. The blessing is even capable of allowing it's holder to survive a direct hit from a nuke, with no side-effects whatsoever. However, it cannot prevent holders from dying of old age, natural causes, or from the losing conditions of a DESPER battle.

Now is also a good time to confirm everyone that has appeared thus far in the story that has Caïssa's blessing. Okisato, Mimoko, Peter, Tsar Grigori, Svetlana, Hagemi, Raymond Redfield, Kuon, all have it. All the maestros and SPCMs have it too even though some SPCMs are rated under 2000. Gyro also had the blessing when he was alive.

Reaching a rating of 2200 alone though doesn't actually grant users the blessing. Talent and potential tend to be the biggest factors though achieving the grandmaster title or a rating of 2600 guarantees someone will get the blessing. There are also rare cases where someone can get the blessing immediately upon registering with the WWCF. Most of these recipients tend to be children though. I actually have plans to further explore Caïssa's blessing and the DESPERs in future seasons of the story so look forward to that.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Dec 05, 2025

That's it? I'll be honest, this does feel a tad abrupt, like it felt like there could be much more to it. It was an enjoyable read, but if I were to compare it to say Rokudo and Hareluya II BOY, I'd say it doesn't quite hold a candle to those. Not that it needs to though. I do feel things rushing a bit at the end soured me slightly though, as things going from Akio receiving the ultimatum straight to big final battle was not the note things should have ended on.

Another critique would be with Tanimaru. Tanimaru becoming good is fine, but the problem is he becomes it within the final chapters and also becomes part of the main gang. It might be a little unfair to keep comparing this to Rokudo, but there, not only did the bully character become a friend early on, but he also got development throughout the various arcs.

Another big critique I have is with the villains. Where exactly were they? Yes, yes, I know there were delinquents to fight as well as Misaki's father, but none of them truly had that threatening antagonist vibe. Misaki's father did at first, but then he decided to spend the same amount of time in this story as he does in Misaki's life, next to none. To invoke both Rokudo and Hareluya BOY, both those series had villains REAL BAD villains. Hareluya more so than Rokudo, but Rokudo's villains were memorable. Here, Misaki's father is about the only one I can say I truly remember as the others are kind of forgettable fodder. I do feel most of my critiques stem from "this isn't Rokudo", which is a tad unfair, though as you're well-aware, this does have some Rokudo vibes while also being distinct.

In conclusion, I think things shouldn't have ended with the final battle so suddenly, and had more build-up and arcs. If I had to make a suggestion, it would be watch and read Rokudo's Bad Girls. No seriously, watch it. It's much easier to see where I'm coming from with some of my critiques if you've got the entire Rokudo story under your belt. Anyway, congratulations on finishing. Hope the pitch for this goes well.
