The key is that Sayuri wants the Takeru to change and understand her. Like the lover in the original story, she takes on a very passive role and is waiting for him to understand her wish; she's also stuck in routine and not capable of creating change in life on her own.
At the same time, she rejects how he goes to the bridge day after day to plead with her and wants to depart with him to a new life, like a prince on a white horse, or alternately the tarot card Death which is associated with endings.
Then, rather than commit suicide they can simply embrace the "Death" of their old identity and run away to another city.
I think this is a strong, meaningful, thesis. Of course, if it doesn't come across in text then that means this may be in need of revision.
