The thesis of the story is that you can't expect to understand a culture in a short period of time, much like you can't mend a family relationship. The narrative arc is Karen gradually realizing her complete lack of understanding and coming to terms with it.
As for the estrangement, there are already a few problems apparent - like the father evidently a foreigner, the mom engaged in the workforce, and the father generally being abrasive that would drive Suzu away.
I would worry that giving the reasoning greater clarity undermines the story themes. I might follow your suggestion and see how turns out. Thank you.
