true story this next scene is inspired by a real moment my friends, my wife and I had in Hakone on our first trip to Japan. Hakone is pretty quiet and we were staying at this beautiful yet slightly haunted feeling hotel in the forest. it was a moderate walk down to the road where several restaurants were. we got down there and the only two restaurants that were open that late were an expensive Michelin restaurant and an American diner with a guy who loooooooved Texas. We all live in Texas and told him that, so he proceeded to very excitedly show us alllllll of his Texas collectibles. we were the only ones in there and he had like 90s American music playing with old NFL games playing on analog TV’s. it felt like a fever dream.

I didn’t really have any direct influences for this one, but I can see a few Japanese film aesthetics here. when I wrote the first version, which this still very much adheres to, I actually was mostly inspired by The Little Prince. how the prince meets all these different people on their journey. this starts with that concept but the latter part really just focuses on grief and loss. originally the five friends were a little more straightforward because I wrote them as the 5 stages of grief. I’m fleshing them out a little more this time, and expanding on certain themes around death. I’m really excited to get to the next arc. the first true horror moment is coming. and by that I mean realistic horror, not monsters, but the horror of how the world would handle impending doom.
