Egotistical but with moderately good, albeit broken motivations. imagine spending hundreds of years seeing the basic structures of the world leading to unfathomable terror and loss, with realities being rewritten thousands of times. you try to find ways to stop it, and you try to convince people to find a better way, but there’s no grand moment of liberation. people are too indifferent and the maji too self absorbed. so the crowns become a way to let people escape and not be troubled. the maji are all slaughtered so they can never bring harm again, and now Mathael is trying to wipe every memory of the old world away, so that no one can ever try to bring it back. brutal, selfishly utilitarian, and ruthless, but not inherently wrong…
