I thought it was the best approach for a very fantastical and complex world. my first focus was Sayane and her journey. we have to relate to and understand her foremost before we care about the world. I didn’t want her story lost in the lore. I felt this was a character story at its core. but you’ll see soon: a broken world needed a broken soul to help it heal.

thank you so much! I’m so happy you enjoyed your time with our dear wounded friends. I loved my time with Izhari and Tomita and cherished their journey. this story is one of two submissions I wrote for the contest, both of which deal with hope and healing. Revolutionary Songstress is about what happens when both of those things are allowed to occur. Salaryman Familiar is about what happens in their absence. Tomita’s suicide. Izhari’s life and existence of grief. the somber brutality of the world. people’s indifference. Mathael’s fall from noble ambitious idealism to tyranny. Izhari’s destruction of everything. and a flicker of hope at the very end. all of it ties together. thank you for the read and comments! also, if you enjoyed the Japan specific references, Our Last Summer will intrigue you. I wrote it last year. it’s about a road trip across Japan between six friends when it’s announced that the world will end in a year. very dark. very sad.
