I know I wrote this with an anti-club vibe, but I did want to have some eye candy for the readers at least for a little while. we’ll get more time with them later! but I loved Kaho’s sensory overload moments too. up till. one, she and Shuhei have both been calming on their detail and sensory awareness. I wrote it to show their mind was calming. But when Kaho arrives in this place, that unravels and all of the senses and details start to get to her once again.

I wanted her parents to be realistic people. we may not get a ton of time with them, but they’re complex. from the beginning it’s been written that they tried in their own way. they got Kaho the best treatments possible, learned sign, tried to be patient with her as she regressed. and even now, her mom’s comment about trusting her and not hiding blades shows they want to treat her like an adult, albeit cautiously. I imagined them as caring, just limited in knowing how to truly express it. but in the end I did believe that they just wanted Kaho happy and healthy.

yep. Kaho arrived at Nikko basically against her will, but after her breaking, after the calmness of nature, of ikebana, and her time with others including Shuhei, she’s allowing herself to mend. her journey is subtle. it’s about self acceptance, grieving what she’s done to herself, finding how to engage with others after years of catatonic isolation, and finding some manner of peace. it’s subtle, and gradual, but I loved writing it. I didn’t want her growth to only be tied to Shuhei.

yep unfortunately there’s an ugly, extortionary side of these places. I’m not saying it happens at every single one, and there is certainly still a cute playfulness to some aspects, but objectively I think there is a caution around them that should be more pronounced. but, that said, I definitely wrote this to be from Shuhei and Kaho’s perspective. these places aren’t Kaho’s cup of tea, and Shuhei despises it now, so the prose and vibes match their perspective.

yep I loved this scene with the cuts of him returning to the ugliness of Eden. and yep Reiji is a not good person for sure. he has a weird care for Shuhei due to their history, but he’s still a monster. Shuhei’s journey was a fun challenge to write. he went to Nikko simply to stabilize. it’ll be clarified in more detail as we go, but at this point, he still wants to hold on to his plan. it’s a little obsessive and unhealthy, and partially why he wasn’t trying to fully “heal” in Nikko.

yep. very much a nature vs nurture reflection. even down to her being a void speaker. how much of this was just inevitable, how much could she change? it was a fun challenge. in the end I view this as a character piece, just like my other stuff. they’re always character studies first, with plot and themes built around them. I really enjoyed my time with Izhari. and I think Tomita became something different than what a lot expected early on. it seemed like some thought he’d be more comedic relief, but instead I loved the idea that he was capable still in his own way, and in the end the most important part of his isekai journey was bringing some humanity into Izhari’s life.

Yep this was probably the most intense and prose-heavy chapter since the opening. I love the idea of teleportation being horrifying. It’s not some simple trick to get people moved, it’s a ripping down to nothing and rebuilding in an instant, and Izhari’s unrefined technique made it worse. This is the beginning of the desperation for them so it needed to be heavy and horrifying.

This was the first true cliffhanger I’ve done. There’s a faint, faint glimmer of hope, so I’d still say this story is hopeful. I want to believe with Tomita that they can fix things. Izhari is clearly god tier powerful, she just has only known tragedy outside of him. Can a life of healing in a pocket dimension be enough? And what adventure and effort will it take to undo everything and try to create something better?
