I said similar things to Mara but this was tough to write because I didn’t want to come off exploitative myself. the girl wasn’t killed, full clarification. I take it as the hotel was just letting Masaru hear what was actually in her spirit. to be in such a horrid place in a horrid role would be terrifying. the eyes appear to Masaru anytime something bad is about to happen, and objectively speaking, for most that are being prostituted and exploited, they are about to experience something very bad every time they are taken to such a place. fully aware that some sex workers are their of their own autonomy and choice, but so many are not.
but yeah that room is creepy. I love the hand bed. the hotel’s theme of touch will tie in with the broader themes of being seen. both will be denied for Masaru. the bed bugs and isolation are just the beginning of his misfortune.

I kind of dreaded writing the scene in the room beside him because it’s such a fine line. I have never had a desire to use assault or violence against women for the sake of advancing story or being a reductive character motivation. but this story is as much about victims and systems of exploitation as it is about loneliness and being seen. so many sex workers are not there of their own will so it’s a very exploitative industry. the girl in the room isn’t being killed, but I imagined it as the hotel just conveying the actual rage in her spirit. it was also maybe Masaru’s panic attack and all in his head. was anyone even there?…
but yeah, bed bugs. true hell.

the auto lock doors are a thing lol! they lock you in till you pay or till your reserved hour is up.
and yep I can definitely see some FNAF connections even if I’ve never played. these monitors will be used for other kinds of dread. the theme of eyes and being watched/scene is the main focus of so much of the story so I want to use it through that lens. poor Masaru isn’t a pervert, and even though he’s an introvert, he’s lonely. this isolation will not be good for him, and he will not enjoy those hidden cameras or what they show.

I’m glad it made you think so much! I truly appreciate your read and engagement! I absolutely adore this story. probably my 2nd favorite thing I’ve written besides Songstress (which also has lots of thought provoking situations, especially in Pt II). I think all three orphans are fascinating characters. Miu is by far one of my best I’ve ever written. and it was a fun journey to create my cyberpunk fantasy magic near future. thank you again for coming along on the ride.
