1) Academics were never meant to take an important place in the story - it is rather just a way to highlight that Ivan was a student and he did some academic stuff - it could be anything, like quantum physics, molecular biology, engineering or something else, doesn´t really matter. I chose Derrida just because I had a whole seminar course about his philosophy at the uni and remembered of him while writing. It´s a minor thing having nearly zero importance for the plot and doesnt´t worth looking for some hidden meaning, honestly. So, I never intended it to have a thematic impact.
2) About grammatical inconsistencies, em dashes and "why they even exist", the answer is simple - English isn´t my first language. Em dashes seemed organic and natural to me but now I understand that I have to learn how to use them properly in English. I also couldn´t afford a native English-speaking editor due to the lack of time.
