Romance is a strong but pleasing display of emotion and feeling, especially when it comes as unexpected or is socially taboo. Actions that exceed logic as well as reasoning but end with a beautiful result are also romantic.
For example, it is romantic when lovers come from groups who are supposed to hate each other (Romeo & Juliet).
Arguably, it is more romantic for a lover to have a troubled past or be haunted by their sins. Rather than someone who is happy and well-adjusted.
The lives of the upper and lower classes are romantic whereas middle class life is not.
And so on and so on.
In your case, this story is romantic precisely because it contains an element of pain and uncertainty rather than one that is always pleasant.
