I think that this chapter does well to show the complexity of life for people who put themselves in front of a camera. You reveal yourself to the world and, if you’re not putting on a mask, sometimes the response people give is horrific and ego-destroying. While the idea of fanfics were fostered and it helped drum up interest in the Hoshinauts, adding in the recordings of their world and putting life to the work was sickening.
I see a relation to the feeling mentioned about the gynoids. Sure they look human but aren’t and when you touch them you feel sick. the fanfics aren’t real but when you add real dialogue it creates this sickening faux reality.
Not to mention that Maeko is a really pot stirrer. I don’t know if it is intentional or because of some disconnect with human emotions, but I do believe it plays into the idea that has been teased a few times that she is unusual in some way.
