Indeed, this is the first moment where I wanted to reveal to the reader that while this is Earth and these are humans, there was a divergent point in history. Instead of the Druids being all but eradicated by Roman conquest, they managed to shift the tides of war and come out victorious. I specifically chose this battle as historically it was the nail in the coffin of the Gallic Tribes and the Druids. This alternate history poses the question of if the Romans didn't get to build the world with their forges and fiat, how would the Druids, with their connection to Nature, have built it?

Sparrow's plan continues to be her own, just as Nature's plan for all of them. I always enjoyed this character because I really wanted every interaction with her to leave more questions than answers. After such a unique life as a servant to Nature, she had become just as unpredictable as a murmuration of birds.

Indeed, there are many factions. I originally wanted a fully unified Earth, but I found a proper utopia to be boring. Even in a post-scarcity reality, there will still be groups that have differing opinions as to what the proper trajectory for society is. As revealed here, you have one set of Druids that side with Mesa and believe the best solution is to remove the weeds from the garden. Then you have another group of Druids that side with Sparrow, and wonder what the weeds are telling them about the soil.

I was really trying to design a society based on nature. I asked myself questions like: How does a forest survive? There is competition, sure, but even the understory trees are given nutrients through the roots from the mature ones. There is more cooperation than competition, while the latter still exists. That was where I added the unique perspective of permaculture to bridge the gap. The challenge really came in where I had to design the original culture of Earth (as represented in the Astra Druids) and the current culture (as represented in the Earth Druids). Similar but different, like the subtle migratory shift of tree species over thousands of years to adjust to the natural shift of climates. Or in this instance, the introduction of the Mecharrion (a metaphor for manmade climate change).

While I wouldn't say my reading of classic sci-fi is extensive by any means, some books really inspired me as a child. Joe Haldeman's 'The Forever War', Ray Bradbury's 'All Summer in a Day', Dune, and even the Ender's Game series (though, now that I'm older, I don't agree with the author's personal views on a lot of things).

I was definitely working with a very different delivery method in this story. I knew there was a whole cosmos present, but it wasn't necessary to discuss. So, instead, I focused clearly on exactly what was needed in this moment for this group of Druids.

Yeah, Hayami really laid it on thick in this scene. I really envisioned this moment to be one of those time when someone comes to a realization about themselves and take it out on someone similar. We’re always hardest on ourselves and to see someone in a similar position it can be really easy to lash out. In this instance she realized that she had nowhere to run now that the spotlights were on her. No family. No friends. And when looking at Oto, relatively alone in this big house, she saw herself.
