I've been kinda grappling with the same thing. To be honest, I want to rewrite his entire introduction and do something different with it.

Getting the whole "bitter hardass but not completely unpleasant" thing is tricky enough to begin with, but the fact that I introduced him with what I now inretrospect feel is a pretty lame and kinda self-worshipping intro has only made that a lot harder.

We need to feel uncertain and even threatened by him, but right now, I don't really feel like I've gotten that right. Hopefully I can fix that in time and dont have to leave it like it is.

Upon re-read, I agree. I think it does come too quickly. I am considering doing a rewrite of the last bit of this chapter and moving that confrontation a few chapters later. I will probably do that at some point here soon.
