Thank you for your feedback, znf!
The meta-humour will have plot relevance later on in the story, although I cannot elaborate for now as it would basically spoil the ending of “Vol 1”. Think to Classroom of the Elite’s Vol. 3 twist where it’s revealed Ayanokouji doesn’t actually feel emotions.
As for the 8man clone, I don’t believe that I am writing one considering that my narrator is nothing like him (even though he wants to believe he is), as his internal monologues and stylistically the way he “thinks” is very different, at least from my point of view. For now, the only thing that would hint at Mizuhara being a loser is the fact that he’s in Class 1-F, however no other character seems to be bothered by this fact or acknowledged it except Yukimura (unlike Oregairu where it’s the first thing spelled out by almost every character).
As for sugar and spice, I have seen it mentioned it multiple Light Novel translations (though this may be a product of localisation), so I won’t touch on that. However I do believe even if there are ‘localisation issues’, they can be fixed with a simple read through by a person knowledgable about the culture.
In addition, do note that Mizuhara claims he is writing a journal, but the story clearly takes place as a light novel.
In conclusion I cannot force you to like the book as this is the style and the theme I’ve chosen, but I greatly appreciate your comment. I acknowledge all of these potential flaws, but since they are so deeply embedded into the book’s theme and plot I am fairly certain they will be impossible to rectify without re-doing the idea from the ground up.
