Yes, and no? A lot of stories I've read have them be either hikkokomoris with no discernible skills, or have their backgrounds mainly be fluff (so, just to add a bit of context to how they die). Esp something like a degree coming into play is quite rare.

I think the start felt faster compared to how it is currently. I think the scene changes in the Prologue sorta contribute to that, but I think there's also a general vibe of 'trying to get to the point of the novel', which is something a lot of stories do.

That said, this could be personal preference speaking since I usually like it when they take a bit more time.
