Just bros, talking in a heterosexual manner. It's honestly annoying to see people hiding things behind their backs, which can later cause misunderstandings and conflicts along the way, so I appreciate that Ren came clean about the whole thing.
If the plot was just: "Making someone love you for the sake of winning, then conflict happens when the real intentions are revealed", I believe this story would just be cliche, predictable and boring.
I'm glad you went in this direction.
