The great explosion I referred to in my story was the same thing as a nuke explosion. It released a corrupted mana on the world like radiation. Melwyn patched a flawed plan in a last-ditch attempt to contain the explosion by converting some of the mana absorbed into a crystal. But with little time given that was the best he could do. The explosion did affect all humans, and if exposed to corrupted mana humans undergo mutations, horrible ones.

I dont know why but the line about the bloodthirsty marketing agents made me think about the scene being chased around by a group of people screaming at me "we are calling you about your car's extended warranty" from the meme.
