    Author's Commentary #474:

Time to talk about Chapter 474: Deep Blue.
Finally, I can talk more in depth on so many of the plot points I've been sitting on. Everyone, meet Deep Blue, the second major antagonistic faction to grace the series, third if we count the Fairies, but they're not as big a threat as the Desperados or Deep Blue. As stated before when Deep Blue was first hinted at and within the chapter itself, Deep Blue takes it's name from the supercomputer that famously beat then-world champion, Garry Kasparov, in a chess match.

This Deep Blue also has a computer affinity as 99% of it's members based in it's home nation of Finland are digitized and can only regain physical forms through either possessing someone and using them as a conduit, or getting a special battery pack. The conduit thing is like how the edo tensei from Naruto works, except they can ditch the corpse after a little bit and not only retain their digital power but also have a proper physical form. Of course, the ones used as conduits die, and brutally too.

This was probably the big reason I ended up procrastinating with 6B because choosing which characters would die is a pretty big deal. Lorna, Trudy, Ye-bin, and Ju-hye were planned from the start to die, but the others were last-second decisions. For the longest time, I was planning on having Alya and Olga die, mainly for shock value, but with how little development Alya got coupled with how I'd have to asspull to make her and Olga lose made me decide to have them not participate in 6B at all.

Laura and Isabella were another pair I considered, though I decided to go against it. The main reason for this was that like Alya, I was mainly going to kill her for shock value, but would have been able to justify her loss due to Isabella being corrupted and throwing games intentionally. What made me go against it though was because I wanted to do more with Laura's character. Though in a video game adaptation, they would die if you failed to complete certain missions while team Tanzania wouldn't even show up unless you fulfilled the requirements to save Laura.

Speaking of Tanzania, they were a pure last-second choice. What ultimately made me go with them was the story value and arcs their teammates could go through as a result of this. Linet wasn't exactly very developed, but Aisha was a DSPCM, and a core component of team Tanzania's story.

Bulgaria I had toyed around with for a bit, but went back and forth on. Obviously I seemed to have settled on that, though I will confirm Radina will appear in flashback chapters. I'll also likely do a side story on her too, so look forward to that.

Now that Deep Blue is here, they are serving as the 9th round opponents for both Japanese teams as Finland. It is worth noting that there is no control over who is able to gain freedom to have a physical body again, which can lead to some non-Olavi loyalists getting out. A majority of the Fins here are anti-Olavi, though not all of them such as Flavio and Irja. Speaking of which, both Olavi and Irja gained their physical bodies back early on, though mainly because they didn't subject themselves to the exact same experiment they subjected the Finnish populace to.

As for the game, this one's a really short one, but I promise this next game between Okisato and Flavio will be amazing. In fact, that's the very game I've mentioned that I had lots of fun writing.

The only final thing to note is that now that Deep Blue has been revealed, I can finally upload the team art of Finland's women's team that I've been sitting on for months. All this time, I've been including the Finnish teams in my counts, yet been holding off on revealing them until now. Thus, the final team counts will be 74 for the women and 36 for the men for a nice even total of 110 teams. And with 5 members per team, that's 550 characters to juggle, not to mention all the other characters already created. And I'm still creating new characters for this upcoming arc.

Speaking of which, Season 7 is almost done. Now I've just got 8 chapters to write before I can edit everything into place. This means that the events being uploaded now for round 9 will happen in earlier chapters. Don't worry, I'll post the proper rearrangement guide once everything's uploaded. That also means the skip guide for Pre 6B won't be necessary. But as a plus, the season will end weeks sooner, and we'll be able to get into the next arc of the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #472:

Time to talk about Chapter 472: Return to Budapest.
Originally, this was going to be the finale of the Kaylee fight, but I decided to just have it be all one chapter. This chapter was originally longer, but I decided to split it up in lieu of the Kaylee fight being merged in the original drafts. But in the revision, I merged this back up with what was once titled, If I only remembered my hammer. Not really much to talk about with this one other than some of the characters have hair again and the very beginning of the chapter with Irja and Phantom.

That bit was actually added in only after I decided to merge the Kaylee fight both to pad out this chapter and tease some future plot points. It's ironic that to the reader, Phantom is a complete bag of mystery while to me the author, I've known everything about this character since the start.

The second half of the chapter focuses on checking in on some of the players following 6B. That being said, I do humor the theorycrafting with Kaylee a bit, hinting that just maybe, she was Chaya this whole time.

And with that, 6B is finally done. Originally spanning from chapters 449-484, for Pre 6B and 485-491 for 6B, the arc is now simply named, 6B, and spans from chapters 449-472. This is far more tolerable to me as my biggest issue before was the padding and sparseness of games. Now the arc which was once my most despised arc has been redeemed. That means Side Story 6 has reclaimed it's spot as my least favorite arc in the series.

And now, I'm pleased to say that round 9 will begin shortly. I had lots of fun writing some of these chapters for the round, with some of them helping me get over the burnout I was suffering from while writing the original Pre 6B and 6B. Like with a majority of the other rounds, this one has been planned since the start, so you don't need to worry about anything like the stuff that happened on the men's side of things in round 7 of the tournament.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #470:

Time to talk about Chapter 470: Smoldering smidje.
And peak chess is finally back. The final battle of 6B is here and it really is something. Originally, I had this battle split into two chapters, but decided to merge them together since I felt it was better to keep the flow going. That means that you get to see this entire epic fight from start to finish in a single chapter.

This game and the bughouse games were the ones I was dreading for the longest time, with my worries with this one being the fact that it's two games at once, so double the work. One thing I will reveal about these games is that both were played against Chess.com's level 25 3200-rated engine bot around late January early February, so I've been sitting on these two games for a while now.

I'll also reveal the reason this match came to be, and that is the Belgian folk song, 't Smidje. It didn't come immediately, but after listening to it enough, I thought that having a final boss fight of sorts with Kaylee would be epic, and that's what ended up leading me to have her be Melisha. I also wanted to use the fight as a chance for Mimoko to be able to save someone, something she wasn't able to do back during the Michiko incident. I also wanted to use 6B as a chance to increase the stakes during the Chess Olympics as with the tournament format, there's been no chances to implement a chess death match.

And for one final thing, I'll leave it up to reader's interpretation to decipher what Kaylee meant in her last line. I guess I should also clarify she really is dead, though there is a chance she'll appear again in flashbacks. I do also plan to divulge the meaning behind her words as well in a later arc of the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #469:

Time to talk about Chapter 469: Kaylee and Chaya.
I wasn't kidding when I said this would be one of the darkest, if not the darkest chapter in the series. What happened to Kaylee and Chaya was completely messed up and inhumane, making it all the more clearer why I said Olavi would be dethroning Kamoshida the piece of shit as the most hated character in the series.

The crazy thing is that I did watch Your Forma and I'm the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire! this past season, yet I came up with the idea of the twins being sliced up and spliced back together long before I even heard of both those series. Though I will admit, they did have some influence on the final draft which you see before you.

One thing I will elaborate more on is Kaylee's psych. Before meeting Ai, she was actually going around killing people by slicing them up with meat cutters, all while insulting them much like how her experience with Olavi went. But after meeting Ai, she managed to channel all that urge into simply shaving heads, which makes her character look even more messed up than before. I actually didn't plan this, but when I realized the way Olavi tortured Kaylee was similar to how Kaylee is when shaving heads, I connected the dots.

While I did mean to showcase more of Kaylee's relationship with Ai, I really want to get through this season first. All I'll say for now is that Ai was easily the one she loved the most and changed her life the most, which led to her fostering immeasurable resentment towards everyone when Ai was killed by Michiko. There is definitely more to this story, but that will have to wait for later down the line in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #467:

Time to talk about Chapter 467: Blitzing beauties.
The 6B tournament has officially begun, and already, you can see where I'm rushing things. I was originally going to feature all the games from the group stage that team Japan played, but only two ended up making the cut. I actually did have some more games written out, but either I lacked the motivation to fully write them out, or I ported them over to another match. I'll have more on that latter bit in the next commentary.

As for the main match featured, it was actually the first match I wrote for 6B, and for the longest time, it was the only match. Bughouse games are really hard to write due to there being no analysis engine, and the fact that I have to remember when pieces are dropped and what pieces are in the move reserve. The second match featured was just a Fool's Mate, so I didn't really need to do much work there.

Though in regards to the second game, it does reflect an IRL problem I faced when trying to get Bughouse games that being automatically losing the match because my teammate just resigned immediately. This is more common than you think, which is why I opted not to try and play the games with other people. Though to be fair, I also needed the games to be high-level as if Mimoko and Daria started playing like a 1000-elo player, that would be bad. Thus, I ultimately decided to just create the bughouse games with two analysis engines open at the same time, editing the position when I felt like dropping a piece. This really took a lot out of me, which is likely why I felt so much burnout for this arc of the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #466:

Time to talk about Chapter 466: The Dark Gate.
6B is finally here, but will be over in under 6 chapters. I'm really not kidding, this arc really will be that short. Anyway, let's talk more about the new characters.

バージニア・アップルゲート (Virginia Applegate) is how Virginia's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is October 21st, which is the day National Apple Day typically is held on.

Her favorite piece is the bishop.

カエデ・ジェクスブレード (Kaede Jex-Blade) is how Kaede's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is February 14th, which is Valentines Day.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

ミスティ・フェアファックス (Misty Fairfax) is how Misty's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is July 2nd. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

ニネッタ・ニジョレ (Ninetta Nijolė) is how Ninetta's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is February 2nd. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

ハイナルカ・ゾルナイ (Hajnalka Zsolnai) is how Hajnalka's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is June 29th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

I don't really have much to say about these characters. They were pretty much last-minute editions and don't really have much development. Though I imagine they'll have more prominence in later seasons. Now let's discuss the venue for the tournament, Esztergom's Dark Gate.

Located below the Esztergom Basilica in Esztergom, Hungary, this dimly lit tunnel looked to be the perfect setting to host the 6B tournament. Not to mention the basilica itself will also be part of the event, as it will be where the finals take place. Speaking of which, when I originally posted this chapter, I was still trying to write out the big finale of the arc. I'll definitely have more to say on it when we eventually reach that point in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:466

    Jul 11, 2025

    Author's Commentary #465:

Time to talk about Chapter 465: Crazy, crazy Tankman.
This chapter is special in that it's been planned for a while and actually was written way back in February. To give some context, for a monthly writing challenge, I decided to write a spin-off of the series centering on the Costa Rican men's team known as The Skeleton Hiker's Journal. Content-wise, I cover all the core things in it in this chapter, with the notable difference being that this chapter is in third person while the original story, which was only a single chapter, was told in first person from Štefan's perspective. Now let's do the bios for everyone.

シュテファン・ピカンテ (Štefan Picante) is how Stefan's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is June 10th, which he shares with Costa Rican grandmaster, González Acosta, Bernal.

His favorite piece is the pawn.

Štefan is actually half-Czechoslovakian on his mother's side. The reason for that lies in the fact that at the time I created his character, the Slovakian folk song, Štefan, was stuck in my head.

フレッド・デュラス (Fred Duras) is how Fred's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is October 30th, which he shares with Czech chess master, Oldřich Duras.

His favorite piece is the pawn.

And obvious reference to the Důras Gambit, said gambit is also sometimes known as the Fred Defense, hence his name being Fred Duras. As you can imagine, that's his most played opening as Black.

マニー・マンドン (Mannie Mandón) is how Mannie's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is June 21st, which he shares with controversial Costa Rican-American grandmaster, Alejandro Ramírez.

His favorite piece is the king.

Mannie's the bossy boss, which is fitting since his name literally means "bossy". I originally had plans to have him be the original from which Manny Pewler was cloned from, but I'm unsure if I'll stick with that.

ハレア・エスケレート (Jalea Esqueleto) is how Jalea's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is July 12th, which is Eat Your Jell-O Day.

His favorite piece is the knight.

The inspiration behind Jalea is actually kind of intriguing. Back in the day, there was this old Scooby-Doo web game known as the Mayan Mayhem. In Chapter 4 of it, there's a skeleton in one of the areas, who you can click on to lose hp, with Shaggy referring to him as "disgusting dead guy". That's stuck with me for all these years, and served as the inspiration for Jalea. Though the disgusting dead guy in Mayan Mayhem didn't have a parasitic jelly living in him and reanimating his corpse.

ルディ・ジョーカー (Ludi Joker) is how Ludi's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is December 22nd, which was the day FatTv's Joker Kitchen-Crazy Hamburger was uploaded.

His favorite piece is the king.

Ludi is obviously based off of Bosnian Youtuber, Ommcoo/FatTv, aka the Crazy hamburger guy. He's also one of the few characters that isn't canonically speaking Japanese, mostly speaking Bosnian and English. As for the Golf, it's a reference to the Volkswagen Golf, a car that's popular in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

And with that, we're now just two chapters away from 6B's start. If you were here for the originals, you must be shocked. I wasn't kidding when I said I'd be cutting Pre 6B, and to be honest, even I was surprised by how much I trimmed it down by. Now the arc will conclude in a timely manner and we can get to more important moments in the main tournament.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
