    Author's Commentary #317:

Time to talk about Chapter 317: Ryonosuke's schooling.
With a title like that, you know things are gonna go down. The question being whether Ryonosuke will be doing the schooling or getting schooled. Turns out it's the former.

Ryonosuke bounces back with a win over Jochi, and better yet, Zago won too, meaning Japan has clinched the match, regardless of what happens on board 1. Ryonosuke needed a win on screen as his round 1 win over Sommer was never fully shown. Thus, I decided it was time for Ryonosuke to get some screentime and a win.

But despite Japan's victory, the fight is far from over though, as Jad is so pissed at this development, he shattered his horse skull mask with his hand, revealing himself to be none other than the infamous Roman von Ungern-Sternberg. For those who don't know, Ungern-Sternberg, also known as the bloody baron, is a historical figure that existed back in the early 1900s, who sought to revive the Mongol empire. He failed, and was captured and executed via firing squad. But in this work of fiction, he survived, which will be properly explained in the next chapter.

Speaking of which, next chapter will mark the conclusion to the Japan vs Mongolia match. It won't be the end of round 5 though as there's at least one team we still need to check in with. It's also possible I'll choose to introduce some new teams and characters, meaning the round might go on for at least another two chapters. Anyway, I hope you're looking forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #315:

Time to talk about Chapter 315: A great miracle.
The conclusion of the Mimoko vs Noa match has arrived, and it sure was a game. For this game, I set the chess.com engine bot to it's maximum 3200 and played it with assisted mode on. Intriguingly enough, he engine actually claims Mimoko was completely winning as early as the 15th move. Nonetheless, it lasted almost 60 moves.

As for the dreidel bit, I have no idea if it's a thing in real life to commemorate the location of something good with a pe dreidel. I just thought it would be a cute and wholesome idea for the story, which is why I went with it, so I hope I didn't offend anyone with it.

As for Noa, there's big plans for her now that she's become Mimoko's rival. She'll definitely get a rating increase and new titles to better reflect her skill. But thanks to her proving to be a rival for Mimoko, Mimoko has hope that she won't completely dominate things on the women's side. Thus, why she believed it truly was a miracle she met Noa. Noa also benefitted from this encounter as meeting Mimoko gave her the needed confidence boost to try and overcome her nerves and unlock her true potential. One fun fact I'll reveal is that Noa's actually 18, making her just a few weeks older than Mimoko.

And with that, Japan continues their perfect victory streak, besting the New Kingdom of Simien. Now it's back to the men's side for the thrilling conclusion to the Japan vs Mongolia match. If you thought the Mimoko and Noa game was intense, just wait until you see the Okisato vs Jad game. It's a cinematic masterpiece.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #322:

Time to talk about Chapter 322: Lured in.
At first, it seems like Tvrtko is actually cold and calculating despite his manically fixed grin. He doesn't play aggressively, in fact it's just the opposite. But just when you think you've got him all figured out, he's leaping in the air and shouting "Artiljerija" before sending a piece flying like an artillery shell. He's batshit insane, but is better at concealing it until the time is right to unleash it upon his opponent.

But the other highlight of the chapter for me is probably the psychological warfare between Okisato and Sejad. Not only did it give me a chance to flesh out Sejad's character a bit more, but it also gave Okisato a little moment here as well. The chapter was also unique in the fact that Okisato himself was looking up the moves before catching up with the current move of the game in order to get a read on what kind of person and player Tvrtko is.

Speaking of which, the game for the chapter was actually a last-minute change as I actually had another game which featured a Tennison gambit originally planned out for use for this chapter. However, I wanted something a bit different from that game, which led to me playing the bots on Chess.com for inspiration. And lo and behold, I got this game. Now all that's left is for Refik to use the power of the Bosnian pyramids to win, or at the very least draw, to clinch the match for Bosnia and Herzegovina. And if they win, there's a high chance they'll be Japan's next opponent in round 6 of the tournament.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:322

    To:Rowan.Burns

I'm glad you think so. That's honestly the vibe I wanted to nail when it came to Kuon. She's fickle, chaotic, and quite vain. She's also got an interesting story behind her development. She originally was planned to be a major antagonist, and a dark one at that, but what happened was I ended up creating more villains, who I liked far more than her. I also just couldn't think of a good plot-line for her. The other deciding factor was that if I made Kuon a dark villain, I had to make Nyoan's backstory dark, which I didn't want as I wanted her to be the designated comic relief character. To give an idea of the vision I had in mind, Nyoan and Nyogaku were originally meant to be honors students who Kuon harbored jealousy towards due to their intellects. Thus, she not only beat them in DESPER matches and turned them into catgirls, but also altered their personalities to make them dumber. Since I already had a better villain in the works to handle the jealousy idea, I felt it would be a bit redundant for Kuon to have that as her main selling point.

But while I didn't know what to do with her early on, which leads to her being relegated to the background most often, I finally figured out what to do with her, meaning she'll become a major antagonist after all, and what she'll do will be quite dark, and very vain. It won't be for a while though, in fact I haven't actually written it yet, but the build-up to it is sprinkled throughout the already uploaded story. The big reveal of her scheme and the main cast's confrontation with her has also been outlined, and will take place when the current season, season 7, reaches it's climax. That is a ways off, but if you like Kuon's character, I hope that info gets you excited for what's to come for her character.
