This prologue is meant to show the inner motivations of the MC, someone who is still immature, but trying to find his way. He lacks confidence and this stems from the dichotomy that is presented here, and how he simply tries to avoid it, embracing things that are 'simpler' to him. And he shuns them because of this immaturity.
