spoilers!!!:

Izhari has been reverse isekai’d into the dream version of Tomita’s previous life, which he is conjuring for her. she has no memory of her previous life, but his projection of himself does. he lets her live a gentle, full, pleasant life until her psyche finally starts to remember her real existence. when she has made some form of peace and soul repair, she returns to the broken world to try and fix things. it’s going to involve retracing Mathael’s steps by conjuring remembrances of his life, until Izhari finally learns enough to try and undo everything and build a better reality for everyone. but it will come at great cost for her and Tomita.

also, final thoughts off the cuff. not sure how well I conveyed the main idea about Izhari, Mathael, and the maji, but in the end I wanted to show that they actually still hold up Mathael’s main issue with the maji. Even he does. he said the maji were brutal, violent, egotistical beings who destroyed the world to fit their own vision. in the end, he kind of did the same, even if for nobler reasons like forcing peace on to everyone. and Izhari, in her brokenness, commits mass murder, kills Mathael, and curses the world to destruction. I
the cliffhanger is to see if she can find a way to undo that, but as it stands now, the two of them ended up perpetuating the maji curse.

also, small detail for this scene and Izhari as a whole, but if you want to hear what I imagined for her theme, look up In Memorium by Hollow Front. it works well as bg music for the end of this scene but also for her in general. I had it on loop when I wrote this chapter.

yep it was very important for me that I got this whole scene right. I wanted to convey the sorrow and quiet terror of watching someone you love fall away no matter how hard you try, I wanted to show Tomita’s guilt and shame and conflict over what he did, and how Izhari still cannot fully process how he could care for her. Two broken souls clinging to one another in a broken world.

This was my favorite chapter in the whole story. Especially their final exchange.

"Izhari, there was nothing for me in that world. There was no one to mourn me. No one to miss that light..."
"I WOULD HAVE!" she cried.
A tear fell from his face on her exposed chest.
"Izhari, if you had been in that world, I never would have done it. I would have happily spent all my days with you, giving you the life we deserved."

The onsen setup was very important for me. You’ll see when you read the chapter: I wanted it to be the opposite of how onsen are stereotypically covered in anime. No lewdness or sexual jokes, just broken, exposed vulnerability.
