That said, while some authors do go with just an extra space, most, especially the really famous ones, always use a symbol – it's called a dinkus, I think. It's kind of a mainstream publishing standard at this point, and it makes sense, because it makes the text way more clear; the space can kind of get ignored until you get confused and look back and realise that there was a scene break there!
Also, for reference, I distinctly remember that J.K. Rowling used the symbol for her scene breaks throughout Harry Potter, and so do many bestselling authors like Stephen King and George R. R. Martin according to a quick web search. Tell that to the fellow who gave you that advice! 😊
