A wonderful start to the novel! Zerin was described beautifully, but it was well spaced out in a flow that moved with the story, and not overbearing so as to overshadow the MC's thoughts, nor the plot itself.
The MC himself is for the most part well written, and his intentions are clear, but some things about his past and motivations feel a bit inconsistent to me. For example, when he acts annoyed at his underlings for doing the exact same thing that he later does to his own chief. (Calling their superiors nickanmes to tease them) It feels hypocritical, though I assume their relationship is supposed to be more personal than that of coworkers? Or maybe it's supposed to be hypocritical? I think that part could be made more clear, anyway.
I really like the complex love/hate relationship dynamic he has with his job. The fact that he hates that it's the reason for his mom's death, but also what gives him purpose (by protecting the families he was never able to experience) is a really endearing part of his character. But similar to above, it does feel a bit inconsistent which times he acts apathetic and professional, and which times he gets more casual.
But again, it was a great read! I'll keep going!
