And since the power and appearance of the creature, which the king and the others had only heard about through stories, matched what Rufus saw, it explains why the king made that decision. As for Iwao, he hides himself by never leaving the forest he inhabits, so nobody would run away or spread word about him.
Well, he called out to them because he didn’t fully understand what had happened to him and was searching for answers. So he thought he could try to speak to these people. And all the action takes place at a distance — he’s never actually near them. He tore the man’s heart out from the edge of the forest through a certain power. But since he neither knows about it nor controls it, he doesn’t understand what happened — just like the reader.
