Indeed. In a visual medium, I would be having her hang ominously back in corners or drawn distinctively in crowd shots so there is foreshadowing that she is lurking around. But as my story is written in third-person limited the ways I have to work with that are equally limited.
And on a separate note the closer parallel to potions would probably be a cooking class, albeit one where you had to gather the ingredients yourself. Science courses like Chemistry and Physics are ironically stuff like Fundamentals of Magic.
And of course nobody gives a shit about literature.
