Definitely a fair point and one that requires me to introspect a bit. The definition of near death experience does encompass both cases you pointed out, but I definitely do not intend to dismiss the point of view
I will say these reactions are more common when one is consciously aware they could die compared to an occurrence that has put them in a state where their very life could cease at any moment.
For example, someone who is shot without being aware a gun is/was aimed at them may go through some of these reactions upon realizing they were shot. However, if they are conscious, they will generally focus on where they were shot and doing what they can to preserve their life more than they would concern themselves about what to do (unless they happen to see the shooter is still aimed at them).
You'll realize upon reading the story which of the cases the lead of the story goes through. If I were to say now which it was, it would be a spoiler for some readers.
As for my writing, you'll definitely get a feel for some of my strengths and areas I'm lacking in from reading the story as is (I do intend to address most of the issues readers have been kind enough to point out before the story is formally completed) :)
