ykno, I can buy Nela liking him even though this is a desperation/convenience engagement. I can see why she'd be fascinated by him and find him cute, and I think she really captures the giddy teen girl in love aura, though this edged dangerously close to Waifu(TM) at the beginning. Like I said in the comment hornyfeet deleted, the story picked up for me once her side was introducef, since from his POV she was a cute elf waifu who cooked for him and... yeah that's about it.
Problem is that aside from being a once in a millennium language prodigy (which is a story convenience and not a trait let's be real) he has nothing. His tragic backstory almost seems designed to vaguely appeal to emotion, bur at least for me, it felt flat. Otherwise, he's just kind of passively been reacting to things while Nela, Meike and even Soren are soing the heavy duty. I get the bland MC is a feature not a bug for LNs, but it doesn't mean I can't gripe about this dammit
as in, Toma had a ton of personality and an interesting arc but everyone else was just kinda there
