Oh, you tackled the racism problem.
Kinda moved it to suspension of disbelief, and wouldn't have mentioned that aspect had you not tackled it.
From what I heard (and which might be bias on my part, I'll admit from the get go) a fair number of japanese (and other folk to some degree or another, let's be honest here) can be quite judgemental towards the non ingroup, be it their neighbouring countries, europeans, or others, but doubly so with non white folk. I faintly remember a bit of stereotypes from reading Gaijin Smash and other sources.
Anyway, I think you handled it well so far.
