It was a very enjoyable read.
I don't have much in the way of valid criticism, mainly because I am very inexperienced as an author at this point in time. It did end rather suddenly, but as you said, you had more planned and will continue the story after the contest period is over, so this isn't really a valid point to hold against you. (I am guilty of ending my own story at least halve a dozen chapters before my originally planned end too.)
