    Author's Commentary #516:

Time to talk about Chapter 516: The man from Vilnius.
Žygimantas' role is about to become much clearer in the grand scheme of things, but I will admit, I didn't expect to focus this season on Yuusuke as much as I have been. It's true he's in need of some focus, which I eventually planned to give him, but Žygimantas coming in to seemingly be what helps get him on track was a last-second decision. It's a bit difficult to discuss this without spoiling the next chapter, so for now, lets do the bios for the two commentators from Chapter 506: A portal to International Chess Day, that I neglected to do until now.

ブレット・ファインシルバー (Brett Finesilver) is how Brett's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is September 6th, which he shares with American grandmaster and streamer, Ben Finegold.

His favorite piece is the king.

レヴォン・ドゥルーク (Levon D'Rook) is how Levon's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is December 5th, which he shares with American international master, content creator, author, and commentator, Levy Rozman.

His favorite piece is the rook.

My apologies that it's taken a while to do the bios for these two, but now things are finally up to date. While this season wasn't originally planned to have much, I feel that with the last-minute shift to focusing more on Yuusuke, it might play out a tad different than originally intended. That said, the season will likely be short as I am writing it while on vacation.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #514:

Time to talk about Chapter 514: The Kawaguchi chess center.
This chapter was primarily spurned by my trip to Kawaguchi, though ironically was written before I even left. Speaking of my trip, as mentioned in my previous commentary, I took a trip to Kawaguchi in order to see what it was like as it is the location this series is primarily set in. The trip proved fruitful as I not only found a real-life location perfect for Chapter 1's iconic match between Okisato and Inojin, but said area also contained a wooden table, perfect for playing chess on, which is where the chess club could also have unofficial meetings, and a large open area perfect for the chess center to go. Maybe if this series gets big, they might really build some monuments there.

Getting back to the chess centers themselves, they're a concept I feel makes sense for the series as it gives cities that don't have a SPCM/DSPCM the chance to have a chess presence in the story. It also allows for cities that already have SPCMs/DSPCMs like New York City the chance to have official chess centers in places like Unison Square while the secret puzzle cafe is in a hotel in Times Square. It also allows the home base of Kawaguchi to have a proper chess gathering place. Thinking about it, Kawaguchi hasn't really been the main setting in the story since Season 1. Sure, it's been there at the start of Seasons 2, 6, and 7, but we really haven't had the story take place their in great length since Season 1. This season and the chess centers will change that as now Kawaguchi will have more of a presence in the story. There might even be a future season that takes place entirely within it too.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
