    Author's Commentary #201:

Time to talk about the Season 6 intro chapter, Chapter 201: Prelude to the Chess Olympics.
So first off, the Chess Olympics are an obvious reference to the real-life FIDE Chess Olympiad which is going on right now in Budapest, Hungary. That's honestly the big reason I decided to start Season 6 now, as I wanted it to overlap with the event, but first I had to finish up the Side Story. I had actually always planned to have this season occur when the Olympiad took place, but didn't realize it started mid-September instead of mid-October like I thought it did. Nonetheless, this season will likely be on the shorter side and may not feature a proper arc villain as it will largely focus on the qualification stage for the Japanese national chess team.

As for the bandaged girl, I'm sure keen readers will be able to tell who she is, but I won't reveal her identity just yet until it's officially revealed in the story. I actually didn't plan on having her game shown, but decided to add in a game post-upload, so now this chapter has a game.

Speaking of which, I suppose it is worth mentioning that this chapter does take place before the end of Side Story 3. However, I will state that it will overlap it and end a few days after it. I also plan to post an official timeline of events in the story so look forward to it appearing in the gallery soon.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #200:

Time to talk about Chapter 200: Chess at the hot spring.
As promised, here's a special fanservicey chapter to commemorate 200 chapters of the series. This time, Mimoko, Iori, and Carol are off to a hot spring, and much to Iori's pleasure, some Japanese macaques are also soaking in it, meaning they can play some 4-way chess.

As for why I went with giveaway 4-player chess over the regular version, I didn't want to have Mimoko look too dumb in her playstyle. Since there's no analysis engine for 4-player chess that I know of, I can't have Mimoko make the best moves, nor can I play against bots, meaning Mimoko's skill during the game would essentially be my 1200 elo skill level, which is far below her level even on a bad day. Giveaway however evens things out a bit as capturing is mandatory if possible. A player getting stalemated also counts as them losing all their pieces, which is why Mimoko won when she was stalemated. Speaking of the game, this was a game played by me against 3 other opponents. I actually lost about 2 games before winning this one. I've actually got a library of 4-player and other chess varients in reserve for future games of the series, but tend to shy away from using them due to the fact that they were all played by a 1200 elo player like me, which is well below the level of most of the main characters. There are times though when I'll justify using the games for characters like Okisato anyway, as was the case with the Chaturaji game, though to be fair, I had a bit more leeway in justifying why Okisato was playing the way he did due to not being too familiar with the game.

And with that, the series has reached 200 chapters. Rather than doing more Side Stories. I've decided to jump into Season 6. As I mentioned previously, this season will either be divided into 3 parts or 3 separate seasons. Right now I'm leaning towards the latter simply because it will be easier to squeeze Side Stories in between seasons than parts of a giant season. Though I will confirm that this next arc will be a tournament-centric arc. Thanks for everyone that has supported this series thus far, and here's to another 200+ chapters.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #198:

Time to talk about Chapter 198: Meadow Hay Mercury.
The climatic showdown of Side Story 3 is here, and there's quite a lot to talk about. First off, the mercury being smeared on the pieces is actually based off a true story where a Russian player smeared mercury from a thermometer on her opponent's pieces. Kugisaki ended up going overboard though and smearing pure mercury on all the pieces, more so on the black due to thinking it would be harder to spot, and that Okisato would be playing as black. However, since Ginji used his DESPER, and there weren't official tournament pairings in effect, he ended up being forced to play as black, meaning he unintentionally got a higher exposure to the mercury than Okisato.

Speaking of which, the mercury poisoning is how I decided to justify Ginji playing lower than his skill level. I was trying to play matches against bots around his elo, but the games ended up going over 50 moves no matter what opening I seemed to play. Thus, I lowered the elo and eventually managed to get this game. I was originally going to have Okisato win with a Bongcloud, but the Meadow Hay worked out much better.

As for Kugisaki, he's essentially been turned into a Mechanical Turk, but still retains his consciousness. For those who don't know, the Mechanical Turk was a famous chess playing automaton built in 1770 and was claimed to be an automaton chess playing machine. In reality, it was secretly controlled from within by a skilled chess player, which is why it was able to beat so many at the time.

The other fun tidbit is that Kugisaki's name, Shin, can translate to "new" in Japanese, however Kugisaki's name actually uses a different kanji for Shin. 新 is the kanji that means "new", thus the joke is that Raymond is essentially calling Kugisaki "New Turk" which is fitting since he's essentially a new Mechanical Turk machine now.
(If I made any mistakes with the translation, feel free to correct me).

As for Ginji, he's likely to face some disciplinary action for being aware of the mercury plot, though it will probably be far less severe than Kugisaki's punishment. Most likely just a fine and week-long ban from playing competitively.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #195:

Time to talk about Chapter 195: Okinawa's Himitsusama.
First off, a small update; I've retconned the Season titles, meaning Season 2 Part 1 is now just Season 2, Season 2 Part 2 is Season 3, Season 3 is Season 4, and Season 4 is Season 5. This also means the planned Season 5 is now the planned Season 6. With that out of the way, let's talk about the chapter.

This Chapter serves as the climax of the arc. I was originally planning to have Kugisaki be the one to face off against Mizuse, but decided that he'll be the type of character that never plays chess. Speaking of which, let's talk about him and Snye Pher.

スナイ・ファー (Snye Pher) is how Snye's name is spelled in katakana. His name is an obvious pun on "Sniper" which is fitting considering he is an ex-military sniper.

His birthday is January 28th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite piece is the queen, due to believing it is the best sniper on the board.

釘崎 紳 (Kugisaki Shin) is how Kugisaki's name is spelled in kanji. 紳 means "aristocrat" while 釘崎 means "nail" and "promontory".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is April 19th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

Since he doesn't play chess, he doesn't have a favorite piece.

As for the game, it was a game played against Chess.com's Nelson bot, who's known as the queen bot, due to him always playing aggressively with his queen. As stated previously, I originally intended for Kugisaki to be the one to face Mizuse, but decided against it due to wanting to build him up as a character that hates chess. On that note, he's likely to return in a future Side Story.

Speaking of which, this Side Story is quickly approaching it's end. The next chapter will likely be the last one, but it's possible I'll extend it a bit more. Then, it's onto the next Side Story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #197:

Time to talk about Chapter 197: The endangered legacy of Mizuse Niimi.
While I originally intended for this to act as the intro to another Side Story, I felt it was best to just merge the two together so that the story flowed better. Now let's talk about Mizuse's proteges, Penny and Sandra.

ペネロペ・"ペニー"・バニラ (Penelope "Penny" Banilla) is how Penny's name is spelled in katakana. Her last name was originally intended to just be a pun on "vanilla", however there's apparently a beauty company known as Banila, which makes her last name fit a bit more as it could be argued to reference that, even though that was never the intention.

Her birthday is May 6th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the queen, just like Mizuse.

Penny was originally designed a while back and planned to be a part of another novel, however, I decided to add her into this one and tweaked her design a bit.

サンドラ・レイシー (Sandra Lacey) is how Sandra's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is July 2nd. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is also the queen, just like Mizuse.

Both her and Penny are 22 years old and half-Japanese Okinawa natives. The two met Mizuse after she found both on the streets in a similar situation to the one she was in, and gave them the chance at a new life. The two quickly rose to become two of her top proteges and closest friends. If Mizuse had officially named a successor, it would no doubt have been these two, as she trusted and respected them the most. They do play chess, however, their skills are nowhere near Mizuse's with Sandra being rated 325 and Penny being 650. Thus, none of them are likely going to be SPCM candidates.

As for the match, it's going to be interesting. Ginji is higher-rated than Okisato, but Kugisaki is also up to his old tricks. Then again, Okisato always manages to win when it counts.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #196:

Time to talk about Chapter 196: The philosophy of Mizuse Niimi.
This was originally going to mark the end to Side Story 3, however, I felt it honestly was better to merge this with the follow-up Side Story I had planned for this arc. Now let's talk about some things. First off, I'm likely going to be rewriting and retconning some things from Season 2 and 3 regarding Mizuse. This probably won't happen immediately, but I'll be sure to mention when it does.

As for the chapter, I decided to have it be a final interview with Mizuse. The main reason for this was that I wanted to showcase a bit more of Mizuse's personality and worldview.

One final thing I'll touch on are the crossover references. The bit about Leona is referencing my other series, Life Stream: Helping a cute girl gain views and likes. The event being referenced though actually occurs after the main events of said story, but before it's epilogue chapters.

As for Streama festivalen, that's a reference to Streamer Royale, which is set to canonically take place in 5 days in-universe on September 5th, 2024. Since Mizuse was also a beauty streamer, she was invited to the event, but sadly died before it could begin. In-universe, the event plans to honor her on her birthday, September 9th. I actually uploaded some art of what the memorial image for Mizuse would look like.

On it, 24 images of the various hairstyles Mizuse has sported, along with Mizuse herself sitting in front, are present. The reason for this is because Mizuse was set to turn 25, but died before she could. Thus, Mizuse herself is meant to represent the 25th image that would have been used to celebrate her 25th birthday.

Now that Mizuse's backstory has been told, the story will now shift towards her company and the troubles it's facing following her death. I originally wanted that to be it's own separate Side Story, just to keep this one solely focused on Mizuse, but it just flows better to have the two together, so that's what I'm going with.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #175:

Time to talk about the intro to Side Story 1, Chapter 175: The cheating Jester.
Buwahaha! The infamous Jester finally makes his debut in this story. And with that, comes his infamous theme song. But first, I want to talk about Grampy Harold.

ハロルド・クック (Harold Cooke) is how his name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is October 18th. I chose the date at random so there's no greater significance behind why this day is his birthday.

He doesn't really play chess, but his favorite piece is most likely the rook, since to him they're the most rough n' tough looking piece on the board.

Now time to talk about Jester. First off, we'll start with his theme song. I attempted to do a Japanese translation of his theme song and provided it below.
Fair warning, since I used Google translate, there's probably a bunch of errors, but here's the Japanese version of Jester's theme song.
[Yoyoi! Ore wa Edo no oku kara kita saidai no hanzai-shadesu. Ore wa soshiki hanzai-kai no ōmonodesu. Daremoga ore no na o osorete imasu! Ore ga nashitogeta zangyaku kōi wa subete! Satsujin! Yūkai! Mayaku mitsuyu! Dare mo dekimasen waga chikara ni hitteki seyo! Tōnan! Bōkō! Sensō hanzai! Sā, kai, waga ikari o osoreyo! Karera wa piero wa orokamonoda to iimasu. Sate, ima dare ga waratteru no, baka? Rararara Ore-sama wa aku de, hiretsude, jaaku de, hijindōteki de, ankoku ninjutsu daimyō ōo ō ōo ō. Yo ō]

As for how his themesong actually sounds, it sounds similar to Master Kohgha's theme from The Legend of Zelda series. Speaking of which, Master Kohga was the biggest influence behind his character along with Don Kanoji from Bleach and Captain Buggy from One piece. Though there's also some Team Rocket in there too considering he always ends up getting blasted into the sky whenever his schemes fail. Needless to say, he's a comedic villain.

ジェスター is how his name would be spelled in Japanese.

His birthday is April 1st, which is also April Fool's Day. Iori also shares this birthday with him, but the two have no relationship to each other whatsoever.

As for his favorite piece, it's the king, because when he plays chess, the king isn't the most vulnerable piece, since he cheats.

Jester is pretty much a staple villain in the Jouzu-verse and one of my favorite characters so it's nice to finally be able to have him debut in this series.

Speaking of cheating, I thought it would be a good idea to have Jester cheat in his chess game. The idea of him using a JESPER was actually an idea I thought up back when I was writing Season 1. The biggest challenge with the game though was determining how and where he'd cheat as I didn't want him to get an overwhelming advantage against Mimoko. Luckily, his skill at chess is pretty bad, and his elo would likely be 0 if he didn't manipulate his rating points.

Believe it or not, he actually doesn't have a WWCF card, nor is he a WWCF member, but the WWCF has in fact banned him from all official tournaments due to his cheating. Even a majority of the underground leagues ban him from play.

However, he is powerful enough to not die when he loses a DESPER match. At worst, he usually ends up getting blasted away. Guess you could say he's on a whole different plane of existence, but nonetheless, is still a comedic villain.

One final thing I'll briefly touch on is the Kirikawa clan. Like Jester, the Kirikawa clan is another staple of the Jouzu-verse with various major characters hailing from it. And as confirmed in this chapter, Harold, Carol, and Iori are all Kirikawas by blood. The Kirikawa family tree in the gallery showcases the exact relationship, but it will also be touched on more in the story as well. And I will confirm that Jester will return and he will meet Nyoan. Of course, I still have to write that chapter so it may not happen for a while.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
