    Author's Commentary #181:

Time to talk about Chapter 181: The Frankenstein-Dracula Vienna surprise.
Turns out anyone really can play chess, even a baby just shy of being a year old. Yumi is indeed a gifted prodigy and has a long prestigious chess career ahead of her. I actually planned to have Iori face Cinnamon first though, but there were a few reasons I had Yumi go first instead. One of which being the game itself.

Since Yumi is a baby, I didn't want her to play a long and drawn out game, so naturally I had to have Iori get overconfident and blunder into mate. I originally had the game as a typical Scholar's mate game, but it quickly became a Vienna game: Frankenstein-Dracula variation, and yes it is a real opening. With a name like that, I naturally wanted to feature it in the series, however, there was a problem; none of the bots I played would even play the Vienna game. I did find a way to make them though, but the games ended up being really long.

Luckily, the Frankenstein-Dracula variation has a mate trap, so all I had to do was have Iori try to pull off a Bongcloud, or should I say Boocloud, and Yumi won. Hmm, perhaps we'll call this the Vienna game: Frankenstein-Dracula, Boocloud mate. Since I used the opening in this game, it's likely not going to be in the next game between Iori and Cinnamon. However, there will be another Frankenstein-Dracula game in the series, perhaps coming as soon as the climax of the Side Story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #136:

Time to talk about Chapter 136: Trial and mastermind.
We're in the endgame now with only 6 main chapters left after this. But there's still one last mystery to solve, but first let's talk about the chapter. It really went by quickly, and as a result of Itsuki testifying, Mahi was eventually found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, all isn't quite well as it appears that Himawari's decided to make her move and arrest Rika. But first, let's talk about a character I meant to talk about previously, Mimi's father, Lucas.

ルーカス・ソルハヴェット (Lucas Sølvhavet) is how his name is spelled in katakana. His last name, Sølvhavet, is Norwegian for "The silver sea".

マーシャ・ソルヴァヴェット (Masha Sølvhavet) is how his wife, Masha, who is also Mimi's mother, has her name spelled in katakana.
Both of their birthdays are on November 2nd, however they were born in different years. This date was chosen at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is their birthday.

His favorite food is kringles while Masha's is suksessterte.

トム・ルビオ (Tom Rubio) is how Tom's name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is December 29th, which is the day Texas became the 28th state to join the US.

His favorite food is chili, which is also the state food of Texas.

テレサ・ブロードストーン (Theresa Broadstone) is how Theresa's name is spelled in katakana. Unlike Tom, she'll be a very important character in other works, in fact her name might give away how she'll fit into the Jouzu-verse.
フィアナ・クニンガーナ (Fiana Kuninganna) is how her sister's name is spelled in katakana. Kunninganna is actually Estonian for "queen".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Both were born on April 4th.

    Their favorite food is cucumbers.

While these characters won't play much of a role in this story, Rika simply meeting Theresa will end up effecting things later down the timeline. I won't say how, but I will say it will occur in En Passant Grandmaster.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #178:

Time to talk about the Side Story 2 intro, Chapter 178: A tale of salt and crackers.
This time, the side story will be focusing on Daria, though it's true plot won't become apparent right away. In fact, the backstory with Bruno was actually a last minute decision, though one I believe was worth it. But first, a bio on Bruno and Ignatz.

ブルーノ・ルマカ (Bruno Lumaca) is how Bruno's name is spelled in katakana. His last name is actually Italian for "slug" which explains why he hates salt so much. Though the bigger reason he hates salt is because his character is a homage to Chess.com's Eugene bot who plays like a top level player, unless you open with Knight a3, the Sodium attack. Then he plays horribly. As such, I decided to pay homage to Eugene, by creating Bruno. And speaking of homages, his rating of 2832 is actually Magnus Carlsen's current classical rating at the time of this chapter's upload.

His birthday is August 1st, which was the 1st day the Eugene bot was playable.

His favorite piece is the rook, mainly because he believes it's the piece that has the least connections to salt.

One other noteworthy thing about him is that he's Swiss, and hails from Lugano, which is located in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. Ignatz is also Swiss, but hails from the capitol city of Bern, which is 30 minutes away from Biel, a city know for hosting the prestigious Biel chess festival.

イグナーツ・ヴァルザー (Ignatz Walser) is how Ignatz's name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is March 12th, which is actually two days before the birthday of Ignatz Victor from Fire Emblem Three Houses, the character who Ignatz's name was inspired by.

His favorite piece is the knight, which is a bit ironic considering the character he's named after, Ignatz Victor, is pressured to become a knight even though he'd rather be a painter.

As for the game, I was originally going to have the game be between Ignatz and Bruno with Daria watching, but decided it worked better to have Daria be the one to play Bruno. Bruno's weakness is actually knowledge only a few people know, and since Ignatz likely wouldn't open with the Sodium attack, nor know of Bruno's weakness on the spot, I decided Daria would be the better fit to play him.

The game was actually played against Chess.com's Eugene bot, though with assisted mode on in order to replicate Daria's skill level. I actually have played some games against the Eugene bot with him at full strength in order to play crazy openings. Naturally, I use assisted mode, but I liked Eugene's concept so much, I decided to pay homage to him with Bruno. Since Eugene's rating is supposedly 3500 when you don't play the Sodium attack, I plan to try and play more crazy games against him, and who knows, maybe some will end up being the basis for future games in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #134:

Time to talk about Chapter 134: Father's Day feast.
I honestly didn't know what I was going to do for this chapter when I initially drafted it, but that quickly changed as I remembered all the side characters and realized they could play a role in this chapter.

First up is Yuki who actually is an Escape Witch character, but never made an on-screen appearance there. His father, Natsuya is actually Gozaemon's third child and only son, making him Harumi's younger brother and Eika's older brother, respectively. I'll do their bios along with Katsuhito's.

銀川 雪 (Ginkawa Yuki) is how his name is spelled in kanji. His name, 雪 means "snow".

His birthday is December 21st. This is fitting since December is a month associated with snow, and the 21st is one of the possible days the Winter solstice, aka the first day of Winter, can fall on.

His favorite food is red bean paste.

銀川 夏矢 (Ginkawa Natsuya) is how Natsuya's name is spelled in kanji. His name, 夏矢, means "Summer" and "arrow", which is a bit ironic since he's a pacifist.

His birthday is November 22nd. The day was chosen at random, but I did make sure it was a date in the season of Fall in order to keep with the pattern of Gozaemon's children being born in the season that takes place after the one they were named after.

    His favorite food is tofu.

加勢川 克仁 (Kasegawa Katsuhito) is how Katsuhito's name is spelled in kanji. His name, 克仁, means "conquer" and "compassion" which is somewhat fitting considering he's a merciless grader and teacher. I'll also confirm that he is in fact Serika's homeroom teacher, meaning he's the teacher that first graded Serika's tests.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is December 1st. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite food is pork ramen.

Funnily enough, this chapter also helped me solve the riddle for how I'd handle the last mini-arc of the series. As for what that is, the hint is that Itsuki will be involved in some way, but won't be the main focus. But first, it's Benihime's birthday up next.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #177:

Time to talk about the finale of Side Story 1, Chapter 177: Kirikawa lineage.
Picking up from where things left off, Iori, Carol, and Harold have been taken to the Kirikawa villa. Here, they'll learn more about their lineage and possibly even some ninja moves too.

Jijiji has also become the second person in the series to learn of Iori's past, however, it doesn't really phase him considering there's been many like Iori in the clan's long history. Speaking of things Jijiji learned, he also learned of Carol's past. I was debating whether or not to show his conversations with Carol and Harold, but felt it would be better saving that for another side story as that conversation will set the stage for said side story. I'm unsure if it will be Side Story 2 though as there's a lot of things I can do with the Side Stories.

As for the series itself, a break from daily uploads is likely as I'm working to finish up the Spice of life remake by the end of the month and I'm planning a new series, Streamer Royale, which was actually referenced at the end of the chapter.

To go on a little tangent about Streamer Royale, it's a crossover work with many of my other novels that take place in the Jouzu-verse. In case I haven't already stated this in a commentary here, the Jouzu-verse is the term I use to describe the universe in which most of my novels take place in. This chapter confirms that within the Jouzu-verse timeline, Streamer Royale will at least take place after Side Story 1 of EPGM. It's likely though that another Side Story or two will take place chronologically before the events of Streamer Royale, but I'll mention that fact when it's relevant. If you're interested in seeing Iori, Carol, and Mimoko interacting with characters from my other works, feel free to check out Streamer Royale.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #176:

Time to talk about Chapter 176: Inspector Prokrutka and the old ninja.
This was originally going to be the final chapter of the side story, but I decided to split the chapter into two since it turned out to be longer than I thought. This chapter introduces two important characters, Inspector Prokurtka from the WWCF and Jijiji, the patriarch of the Kirikawa clan's main branch. Let's talk about both.

ウラジスラフ・プロクルトカ警部 (Inspector Vladislav Prokrutka) is how Prokrutka's name is spelled in Japanese. Инспектор Владислав Прокрутка (Inspector Vladislav Prokrutka) is how his name is spelled in Russian. His last name means "scroll". This is fitting since Prokrutka is said to have scrolls of data he claims prove certain players have cheated.

His birthday is June 25th which he shares with 14th chess world champion and Russian grandmaster, Vladimir Kramnik.

His favorite piece is the knight, due to Petrov's defense being one of his most preferred openings.

Unlike most of the other characters in the series, Prokrutka's character was based a bit more heavily off the real world chess player he shares his birthday with compared to the others. All I'll say on that is if you know, you know. In terms of his design though, he's actually based heavily off of Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther series and looks very similar to him.

ジジジ (Jijiji) aka 切川 一二三 (Kirikawa Kazujizou) is how Jijiji's name is spelled in Japanese. 一二三 means "one", "two", and "three", while 切川 means "to cut" and "river".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is March 3rd which he shares with his two triplet siblings, Roichi and Minii, as well as his great grandchildren Kasumi, Nika, and Miku.

He doesn't really play chess, but his favorite piece would likely be the king, mainly because that's his favorite shogi piece.

As stated before, I ended up posting a Kirikawa family tree in the gallery. While it is labeled with a "Spoiler" tag, that's mainly due to the fact that it was posted before it was revealed in the story that Iori, Carol, and Harold were Kirikawas.

Since some of the protagonists from my other series are Kirikawas, there's a good chance Iori will meet them soon enough. Of course the question of whether she'll first meet them in this story or elsewhere remains to be seen.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
