    Special Author's Commentary:

Surprise! Turns out I decided to give this series another chapter on it's one year anniversary. I think as a joke I might only upload chapters to this particular novel once every year. However, the gyarus and JZ will be making more appearances in other works.

Some of you might have noticed that I changed JZ's name from Hiroto Hatori to Jouzou Hiroto. That was actually because I legitimately forgot Hiroto was his first name and not his surname. Though I like his new name much better.

Speaking of names, time to list everyone's name and birthday.

廣戸 丈造 (Hiroto Jouzou) is how Jouzou's name is spelled in kanji. ジェイジー (JZ) is how his nickname would be spelled in katakana. 廣戸 means "spacious" and "door", while 丈造 means "height" and "build".

His birthday is October 8th, which is the same day as this series' anniversary.

赤禿 逢 (Akahage Ai) is how Ai's name is spelled in kanji. 赤禿 means "red" and "bald", while 逢 means "encounter".

Her birthday is October 9th, which is one day after this series' anniversary.

藤藁 希望 (Fujiwara Mirai) is how Mirai's name is spelled in kanji) 藤藁 means "wisteria" and "draft", while 希望 means "wish" and "hope".

Her birthday is also October 8th, but she's a year older than Jouzou.

久良木 風祭 (Kuragi Kazamatsuri) is how Kuragi's name is spelled in kanji. 久良木 means "ancient", "good", and "tree" 風祭 means "wind" and "festival" while 久良木 means "ancient", "good", and "tree". As stated in the chapter, she prefers to go by her last name simply because it's shorter, but is also fine with being called, "Matsuri".

Her birthday is October 9th, which is the same as Ai.

七ツ木 華魅 (Nanatsugi Hanabi) is how I believe Hanabi's name would be spelled in kanji. 七ツ木 means "seven" and "tree" while 華魅 means "flower" and "charm". Since I couldn't find a proper kanji name for "Nanatsugi". there's a good chance the translation is wrong, at least for Hanabi's surname.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is also October 9th.

One final thing I'll mention is that I did upload some art of the gyarus and JZ. JZ has now been redesigned to look more like Okisato, which might seem lazy at first, but I guarantee it will play a greater part in Jouzu-verse lore. Speaking of which, this work is now finally part of the Jouzou-verse. I was actually considering whether or not to include it, but I finally figured out how to properly implement it into it. That means JZ and the gyarus will be appearing in Streamer Royale, so go check out the latest chapter if you want to see JZ and the gyarus interacting with everyone else.

That's all for this special commentary. I hope you enjoyed reading it.

    Author's Commentary #221:

Time to talk about Chapter 221: Muzio Marauder.
This chapter was a bit different as I decided to experiment a bit and have all the banter take place in the minds of the characters. It's also my second proper attempt at trying to get a draw by repetition game, though compared to others, this one was by far the easiest.

If one were to paste the game log of this game into an analysis engine, they'd see that Skaberghast really is playing perfectly, while Okisato's struggling to keep pace. This is largely due to him not studying the Muzio line, since usually he won't accept a king's gambit, nor play a Muzio gambit himself. As for the last line, Armageddon means Black gets draw odds, while White gets more time on the clock. I do plan to have a proper Armageddon match in the upcoming arcs so look forward to that.

Finally, this is the final game of the season, and since this was also the big confrontation against the season's villain, it's time to talk about what sin he embodied. Skaberghast's sin is obviously sloth. He's lazy, has others do his work for him, and ultimately tends to care very little about what happens to the world at large. Heck, the man even admitted that his own indolence is the only thing stopping him from taking over the world as he's highly intelligent. He might have also been able to push for a win, but decided not to as he wanted to end the game quickly so he could take a nap.

One last thing to note is that the season is almost over and has about 2 chapters left. Afterwards, I think it will probably be Side Stories for a bit, maybe an updated Top 10 list, and then it's on to the Chess Olympics in Season 7. That arc will undoubtedly take tons of prep time, so expect more Side Stories.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #220:

Time to talk about Chapter 220: Agatha and Kana.
Okisato's mother, Kana, finally makes her proper debut, yet this only offers a small glimpse at what she is like. It's also revealed that Agatha's not a natural red head, but has been keeping her hair dyed red since her first encounter with the DESPER prototype. Now let's talk about Kana.

田辺 佳和 (Tanabe Kana) is how her name is spelled in kanji. 佳和 means "beautiful" and "harmony".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).
Her birthday is May 4th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this day is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the pawn, mainly because she believes it's the most versatile piece.

More will obviously be reavealed about Kana as the story progresses, but for now, I just wanted to properly introduce her as she's been built up as far back as Season 1. As for the game, I decided I wanted a quick checkmate, mainly so things wouldn't get too drawn out. Agatha at the time was a complete novice at chess, still is today, but it was easier to justify her losing to Kana. Speaking of games, there's still one more game left to be played this season, and it's against Skaberghast. Unlike the other games, this one will be a much more audacious task for Okisato as now he's on the other end of a risky gambit.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #219:

Time to talk about Chapter 219: Salem bishop and a Witches' Broom.
Mother Salem really hates bishops, so much that she'll even sacrifice the pieces with their namesake just to get them off the board. And ironically, it was a bishop that ended up mating her in the end.

I actually had this game written out a while back, but was unsure when I wanted the match to take place. I was debating having the encounter be in a side story, but ultimately decided it was best to have the Mother Salem match be a part of Season 6. As a result, I ended up giving Agatha a bigger role in the grander scheme of the story. It is also worth mentioning that Mother Salem's rating of 1692, is a reference to the year the Salem witch trials began.

    Speaking of the game itself, it features a new opening, which I'll dub the Pirc Defense: Witches' Broom variation. The reason for this is simply due to the fact that after either 1. d4 d6 2. c4 Kd7 3. e4, 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Kd7 3. c4, 1. d4 d6 2. e4 Kd7 3. c4, 1. e4 d6 2. c4 Kd7 3. d4, 1. c4 d6 2. e4 Kd7 3. d4, or 1. c4 d6 2. d4 Kd7 3. e4, the formation of the pieces resembles a witches' broom.

It does suck for Agatha though. She finally killed Mother Salem and will presumably be the next head of the Broadstone family, but Okisato seems determined to ensure she never leaves. Even though the climatic match is over, there's still quite a few chapters left of Season 6. Notably, Okisato's mother, Kana will finally make her proper debut next chapter.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #217:

Time to talk about Chapter 217: Cutthroat philosophy.
This chapter's purpose is to introduce the powerful head of the Japanese chess federation, Sodeshirou Azami. It also reveals what Daria's surname was before she married Ichimitsu. Let's talk about that first.

扇能 堕美闇 (Ogino Daria) is how Daria's original name was spelled in kanji. 扇能 means "fan" and "talent".

This does also confirm that Daria was well known before becoming a maestro, however, upon surpassing the 3000 rating mark, all public records of her were hidden due to the effects of the maestro project. Since Sodeshirou was not only head of the Japanese chess federation back then, but also knew Daria personally before she became a maestro, he was well aware of Daria's maestro status. He was actually against the maestro project as it meant Daria essentially had to end her competitive career due to being too powerful. Now let's talk more about Sodeshirou.

執見 袖四郎 (Azami Sodeshirou) is how Sodeshirou's name is spelled in kanji. 袖四郎 means "sleeve", "four", and "young man".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is November 29th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite piece is the queen, since the queen has the most potential on the chessboard.

Sodeshirou's character could be considered a left-over concept I originally had for Raymond. While Raymond does seek to find talent and make the field as strong as possible, he doesn't discard anyone when they either pass their prime or start to get surpassed by the younger generations. Sure he'll naturally praise the latter more than the former, but he believes that even the old guard can still show why they're considered the best of the best.

Sodeshirou on the other hand just wants the best of the best, and it can be said his philosophy was part of the reason Michiko ended up the way she did. Though I will confirm that even if he was loving and caring, Michiko still would have ended up the way she is now, simply due to her being jealous of Daria being better than her and for becoming a maestro while she couldn't.

Now Kuon is the next victim of Sodeshirou's philosophy, and as a result, it's implied she'll change federations and represent a different country. She seems to want to represent a country with good winning chances though, and the reason for that will be revealed in a future season.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #216:

Time to talk about Chapter 216: Battering ram Muzio.
Believe it or not, there really isn't much to discuss with this chapter. It actually came about more so since I was trying to come up with a chapter to pad out the story a bit, and well, this was the solution. Simone put up a decent fight, but tripped up as soon as Skaberghast played the Muzio. And as a result, she'll now have to aid in his experiments, essentially joining the other college girls at the lab.

One thing I will reveal though is that Skaberghast is 35 years old, while Simone is actually 22 in witch years, but 44 in human years, thus she is technically older than Skaberghast. As for the other witches, Mother Salem is 342, which is 171 in witch years. Agatha is 80, which is 40 in witch years. Elenora is 75 which is about 37 and a half in witch years. Sabrina is 40, meaning she's 20 in witch years. Emmie was also 40, meaning she was also 20 in witch years. And finally, Lynessa was 50, making her 25 in witch years.

As for Kristalo, he's actually 19 in both human and witch years. The reason for that is because the males of the Broadstone family age normally, as do their descendants. Though it is worth noting that women descended from a Broadstone male will start aging slower once they hit 25. Though Carol also has Kirikawa blood, meaning she'll essentially age like an elf as Kirikawa genes have both longevity and youthfulness. No one in the Broadstone family and even Carol's own mother knew of the Kuninganna's Kirikawa lineage though, so that played no role in Mother Salem permitting Theresa to marry into the family.

One final thing I'll reveal is that the Muzio gambit is Skaberghast's best opening. He's studied it extensively and knows all the lines, which has led to him getting a 100% win rate with it whenever he plays it. However, even when he doesn't play it, or his opponent doesn't let him play it, he still tends to win more often than not. His rating would likely be higher too, but remains just above 2700 primarily due to his laziness. Though if he puts in the work, he could very well be above 2800 by the next season.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
