    Author's Commentary #43:

Time to discuss Chapter 43: Caïssa's blessing
Caïssa is known as the goddess of chess. As such, I felt I needed to make reference to her in the story, and what better way than via the Caïssa's blessing function of the WWCF card.

As explained in the chapter, this feature prevents holders of it from dying due to unnatural causes. For example, Svetlana has it which allows her to function as an invincible one-woman army. As such, she's often tasked by her father to eliminate his foes as Caïssa's blessing prevents weapons from harming her. The blessing is even capable of allowing it's holder to survive a direct hit from a nuke, with no side-effects whatsoever. However, it cannot prevent holders from dying of old age, natural causes, or from the losing conditions of a DESPER battle.

Now is also a good time to confirm everyone that has appeared thus far in the story that has Caïssa's blessing. Okisato, Mimoko, Peter, Tsar Grigori, Svetlana, Hagemi, Raymond Redfield, Kuon, all have it. All the maestros and SPCMs have it too even though some SPCMs are rated under 2000. Gyro also had the blessing when he was alive.

Reaching a rating of 2000 alone though doesn't actually grant users the blessing. Talent and potential tend to be the biggest factors though achieving a rating of over 2500 guarantees someone will get the blessing. I actually have plans to further explore Caïssa's blessing and the DESPERs in future seasons of the story so look forward to that.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #42:

Time to talk about Chapter 42: The mad tsar.
And what better topic to discuss than the mad tsar himself, Grigori Ivan Vasilyevich I. He's one of the higher-ups in the Desperado league and is Svetlana's father as well as the leader of Russia. He came to power by winning a DESPER match and as such, decided that upon becoming the new leader of Russia, he would bring back the monarchy. Thus, his official royal title is Grigori Ivan Vasilyevich the 1st of Russia. He is actually descended from one of Ivan the terrible's illegitimate children though, and as such, bears royal blood.

Speaking of which, Tsar Grigori draws heavy inspiration from Ivan the terrible.
Григо́рий Иван Васильевич I (Grigori Ivan Vasilyevich I) is how his name is written in Russian, with his middle and last name being spelled the same as Ivan the terrible's.
    グリゴリー・イヴァン・ヴァシレヴィッチ1世
(Grigori Ivan Vasilyevich I) is how his name would be written in Japanese.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His rating of 2818 is actually a neat reference to the day Ivan died. The day was March 28th 1584, but O.S. (old style) March 18th 1584. And of course, Ivan infamously died during a chess game. Perhaps that might hold clues to Tsar Grigori's fate in the story.

His birthday is August 25th which is shared with Ivan the terrible. Fun fact: The birthday was O.S. August 15th.

As for his favorite piece, it is the king since he himself is tsar of Russia.

Grigori's introduction originally occurred in Chapter 47, but as part of the revisions, I decided to move his introduction up as I felt the story flowed better. I feel his introduction here also showcases his cruelty better and why he's going to be such a major villain in future arcs.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #210:

Time to talk about Chapter 210: Empathetic yandere.
It's been a while since a game was split between two chapters, but I felt it would make a good cliffhanger, so that's why it's happening. Now let's discuss the new characters.

エミー・ブロードストーン (Emmie Broadstone is how Emmie's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is June 12th, which is also the day Raiders of the Lost Ark was released.

Her favorite piece is the queen, mainly due to it being a good number of people's favorite piece.

クリスタロ・ブロードストーン (Kristalo Broadstone) is how Kristalo's name is spelled in katakana.
His name is actually Latin for crystal, which makes sense considering he's essentially a living crystal ball.

His birthday is January 6th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this day is his birthday.

He doesn't really play chess, but his favorite piece would probably be the queen.

シモーネ・ブロードストーン (Simone Broadstone) is how Simone's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is October 11th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this day is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the pawn, mainly because she tends to view people as pawns.

One final thing I'll mention is that Caïssa's blessing is the reason Emmie's power didn't affect Skaberghast. Iori has yet to acquire it, which is why she was still vulnerable. It's also becoming more clear how Skaberghast will cement himself as the main villain for the season. While a climatic final battle with him is unlikely, he is clearly showing why he's the main villain of the season, and will only continue to do so in the next chapter.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #209:

Time to talk about Chapter 209: Chicken bone chaos.
Just as I hinted in the last commentary, it's Mimoko's time to shine. It's actually kind of hard to believe it's been a while since Mimoko had a proper match. Speaking of which, the match was quick, but it showed how Mimoko dominates with the London System. And speaking of witches, let's talk about Lynessa.

リネッサ・ブロードストーン (Lynessa Broadstone) is how her name is spelled in katakana. Her name is actually one of the many names given to the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Her birthday is May 17th, which is the day The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was released.

Her favorite piece is the knight, mainly because it's the closest piece to a chicken.

To be honest, I only decided to make the Broadstones a family of witches at the last minute, but I'm glad I did. Them being witches adds a bit more creative flair to the story and I enjoy writing the characters too. In fact, I ended up liking some of the characters so much, that I really felt bad about killing them off, but sadly some need to die for the sake of the plot. I'd argue most of the Broadstones will be likeable antagonists, but there will be a few that will be irredeemable.

Speaking of antagonists, it turns out Skaberghast is on track to be the main villain of the season after all. This will become much clearer in the next few chapters.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #208:

Time to talk about Chapter 208: Anderspiked.
The name is an obvious reference to the name of the opening featured in this chapter, the Andersspike. I've actually been meaning to feature a game with that opening for a while, but only found a good place to put it in just now. Now let's talk about Alma Mata.

アルマ・マタ (Alma Mata) is how her name is spelled in katakana. It's an obvious pun on the Latin phrase, "Alma mater".

Her birthday is October 17th. I chose this date at random so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the pawn, as she believes it can promote itself to another piece, reminiscent of an actor assuming the role of their character.

Alma is a drama student and seeks to become an actress. To be honest, she's more of a one-off character, but perhaps I'll figure out a way to bring her back.

And with that, only one more round of the qualification tournament remains for the day. While there doesn't seem to be much drama occurring within the tournament, there's most certainly some drama brewing outside of it. I will say though that this season is slowly shaping up better than I thought it would, and will likely be longer than I initially planned. Though it will still be one of the shorter seasons in the series when all is said and done. There have also been far more games than I initially planned. So far, Carol, Utami, and Iori have all gotten games. That just leaves Mimoko. Perhaps she'll get a game as soon as the next chapter.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:208

    To:Taylor J

Naturally. The online mode would be critical to the game's long-term success in my opinion. It would be as simple as just being able to play chess online, but that's a critical feature that would entice both chess newcomers and veterans alike. Since I'd want this game to be on as many platforms as possible (mobile, PC, and console) I'd make it mandatory that the online experience is the best it can be.

Story mode would essentially be the way to unlock CPU opponents and cosmetics for player's avatars, but I would likely have the 1st chapter of story mode serve as a tutorial of sorts before players get free roam. Though I might just have a normal tutorial instead.

My original idea for a tutorial is that a character will ask the player how good they are at chess. If they answer, "new player" they'd get a brief overview of the game and play a tutorial boss with assistance. If they answer "experienced" they skip the tutorial and jump straight into the tutorial match. But if they answer "I'm a grandmaster" they are prompted with one final chance to reconsider before being forced to play a 2700 elo CPU opponent where losing or drawing results in a loss and being forced to go through both the beginner tutorial and the tutorial battle as punishment.

Though since I kind of want to to entice players to check out the story, I might settle on having things go as follows, [Initial start-up (language and region selection)- Story mode prologue (Chapter 1 of series {with player being guided through the fight with Inojin})- After Inojin is defeated, avatar selection- Then player is taken to hub area where the host of the game explains the various modes before directing player to approach a mysterious woman. The woman then asks the player if they are satisfied with their initial elo rating of 100 and offers to give them a one-time only test to give them a chance to raise it. Here, the options would be, "no" which allows players free roam, "rookie" which allows players to raise their rating to 500 if they play against the 100 elo tutorial boss, "intermediate" which allows the player to obtain a rating of 1200 if they beat the tutorial boss when he plays at the level of a 1000 elo player, "advanced" which allows the player to obtain a rating of 1800 if they beat the tutorial boss when he plays at the level of a 1500 elo player, and finally, "I'm a grandmaster" which allows the player to face the mysterious woman who plays at the level of a 2700 elo player, with losing or drawing resulting in the player being forced to watch a tutorial on how to play chess as punishment. After that, players would be allowed to either explore other modes, do story mode, or go online.

It's also worth mentioning that there would be a way for players with an official title, (grand master, international master, etc) would be able to have their title show up next to their username after going through a verification process.

One final thing I'll mention is that online tournaments would take place every weekend and allow the players to unlock new hubs, CPU opponents, and even Side Stories just by participating in them. Essentially, the hubs would be different hotels around the world where the tournaments take place, but to unlock the Cpu opponent, you'd have to find them hidden within the hub and ask to challenge them in order to unlock the option to do so whenever. In-game currency would be required to challenge these characters, but it would be easy to obtain. More on this vision will become clearer in the next three chapters. This along with updates to story mode would serve as a long-term pull to keep players enticed. There would also be weekday tournaments and special events as well, just to name a few. In short, I have a really ambitious vision for this project.
