    Author's Commentary #214:

Time to talk about Chapter 214: Upset result.
The results have been announced, and Kuon has not made the team. As for how exactly that came to be, it's clear Mimoko beat her, but the full story will have to wait until the next chapter. What won't have to wait is the bios for the new characters starting off with Agatha Broadstone.

アガサ・ブロードストーン (Agatha Broadstone) is how her name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is October 19th. I chose the date at random, but the month was intentional, due to October being the month of Halloween.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

Agatha is the second daughter of Mother Salem, and is constantly hatching schemes to try and usurp her as head of the Broadstone family. She actually doesn't care much about Carol, but will use her defection as a way to try and bring down Mother Salem.

マザー・セーラム (Mother Salem) is how Mother Salem's name is spelled in katakana. Her real name has long since been forgotten to the passage of time, though it's rumored she was born in the 1600s and lived through the Salem witch trials, from which her name is based off of. She does actually write "Mother Salem" on official documentation, even though she herself remembers her real name.

Her birthday is February 25th. This is reportedly the date the Salem witch trial reportedly began.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

サブリナ・ブロードストーン (Sabrina Broadstone) is how Sabrina's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is October 24th. I chose the date at random, but the month was intentional, due to October being the month of Halloween.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

エレノラ・ブロードストーン (Elenora Broadstone) is how Elenora's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is November 7th. I chose this date at random so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the knight.

While the tournament may be wrapping up, the season is still far from over. The next chapter will showcase the final decisive match from the tournament, and then the climax of the season.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:214

    Author's Commentary #213:

Time to talk about Chapter 213: Bloody tears.
First off, revisions for Season's 2 and 3 have been completed. There might still be a few minor revisions for the end of Season 3, but all the major ones have been completed. I will also confirm that major revisions are coming for Season 4, along with some more minor ones for Season 5. They won't affect the overall plot too much though.

As for the chapter, it's finally revealed that the bandaged woman is in fact Tenju Kuroshiro, aka SPCM Himitsutan. Thanks to her winning the game back in Chapter 201, she now possess the same chess prowess as her late twin sister, Taira. This is how she was able to play so well, however it still wasn't enough to beat Daria.

Speaking of which, I originally had a far more tragic fate in mind for Tenju, but that was back when I was still writing Season 3. I decided she's suffered enough which is why things will finally be looking up for her following this chapter.

My favorite part about the game though was easily the series of checks given by Tenju at the end. I feel it really helped elevate the story, and bring excellent closure to her character arc. However, if Tenju ends up making the women's national team, then that means she'll get more screen-time. It's not a guarantee given the competitive field, but a strong possibility. What is guaranteed though is that she'll be returning to her SPCM duties, and will be allowed to increase her rating thanks to the WWCF's new policy changes. Perhaps she'll even become a grandmaster.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:213

    Author's Commentary #85:

Time to talk about Chapter 85: True beauty.
If there's one thing this chapter made clear, it's that the main villain of this arc is a truly nefarious woman. Not only did she warp the personalities of the SPCMs, but she also made it so that if they lost a DESPER match, they'd be freed from their brainwashing, but either killed or permanently injured. Unlike in the previous chapter, there is no backstory for either Safumi or Mizuse. For Safumi, I have plans for her and as such, her backstory will gradually be revealed in the story. All I'll say about it is that it is sad.

As for Mizuse, I didn't really think of much of a backstory for her at the time, however, thanks to the revisions, she has been fleshed out a lot more. In turn, that makes it all the more tragic that such a kindhearted woman will now have her legacy tarnished thanks to the false maestro. And while it may not have been entirely obvious in the chapter, Mizuse is in fact dead, and not merely trapped in a statue. I was originally considering that to be her fate, but in the grander scheme of the story, felt having her actually die made more sense. I will also confirm here that there is a Side Story that divulges Mizuse's full backstory, however, it takes place almost 100 chapters from now after the events of Seasons 4 and 5 along with Side Stories 1 and 2. There is a story reason why it occurs then though.

As for the game, it was really fun to write. While it is much harder to write 4-player chess games, I definitely wanted to have some in the series. Even after this arc, I feel like there will be more 4-player games in the series.

However, the next chapter will feature a slight break from the 4-player chess action in order for Mimoko to have a 1v1 match against Doraaki, the one SPCM she has yet to beat. Plus, I also want every SPCM to have at least one 1v1 chess match. If Mimoko beats her, which seems likely, she'll be the one most likely to challenge Ai Kamuro in hopes of saving everyone.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:85

    Author's Commentary #84:

Time to talk about Chapter 84: Tenju and Taira.
This chapter was brutal. Poor Tenju just ended up suffering and Taira was killed off in brutal fashion. It just goes to show how vile the main villain of this arc truly is.

As for why Okisato said what he said to Tenju, unlike the other SPCMs, Tenju was not brainwashed. However, instead of seeking better ways to truly try and save Taira and stop the false maestro's plan, she decided to aid her and as a result, became complicit in her scheme. To be fair, Tenju did try to save Taira once, but after having her spirit crushed, resigned herself to aiding the false maestro.

One thing I was unsure if I nailed when I originally published this chapter, was if I made readers care enough about the SPCMs. At the time, I went back and forth on whether I wanted to have more character moments with the SPCMs before they got brainwashed. I ultimately decided not to, since I felt it would be forced and bloat the story.

Thanks to the revisions, I feel the SPCMs have been a bit more fleshed out. Doraaki is still a bit on the underdeveloped side, but I feel Mizuse and Tenju have been fleshed out far better than in the original drafts. As for Tenju and Taira's backstory, I was originally going to make it its own chapter, but since the game was so short, I decided to include it in the chapter with the game.

Speaking of which, the first 4-player chess game has finally graced the story. The game was heavily inspired by a team 4-player chess game between Gothamchess, Eric Rosen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Agadmator. In the game, the team of Gothamchess and Eric Rosen checkmated the team of Hikaru Nakamura and Agadmator in two moves. Since this game is essentially the fool's mate of 4-player chess, I decided that Okisato and Iori would be the ones to play it, and that Tenju would be the most likely to blunder it.

As for the upcoming 4-player chess games, I will confirm that they are both much longer than the one here and will be far more thrilling than this one.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
