    Author's Commentary #159:

Time to talk about Chapter 159: Fog of war and sexy feet.
Yeah, you can blame a Russian girl named Alya for the fanservice featured in this chapter. That aside, this chapter actually was one of the more tense and suspenseful chapters yet. This is entirely due to the fog of war match.

For those who don't know, fog of war chess is a chess variant where the board is shrouded in a thick fog, and you can only expand you field of vision by moving your pieces. Throughout the chapter, the only moves I specifically mentioned Xiu making were the ones Okisato could see. I felt this helped add to the tension of the game, and yes, Xiu was truly moving all the pieces with her feet, and capturing Okisato's pieces with them too.

As for the game, it was a match I played and won online. My opponent ended up resigning, but that was because there was no way for them to win anyway as no matter what move they made, I'd capture their king next turn and win the game. As for why I did a fog of war game, I wanted the game played to be a chess variant, but one that couldn't be blitzed through as quickly. And speaking of chess variants, I've got plans to incorporate some of the chess variants mentioned in this chapter into the story. Notably Chess 960 which I actually have quite a few games for. Considering how big Chess 960 is, I'm happy to announce it will finally be making it's debut next chapter in Okisato's match against Bao.

As for the time it took to win this game, 5 minutes. That combined with the 15 minutes of the chaturaji game, the 3 minutes to beat Tao, the 7 minutes to arrive in China and beat Hui, means it's taken Okisato 30 minutes to reach Bao. How long it takes Okisato to defeat Bao will be crucial to deciding if he gets there in time.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #155:

Time to talk about Chapter 155: The Bertin meat shield.
Red Reaper is pretty much evil Subaru from Re-Zero, except he doesn't go back in time when he "dies", rather he flat out revives on the spot. This is why he's such a fearsome opponent, as if he's pursuing multiple targets, he'll happily "kill himself" just to get a new DESPER and challenge his opponent instantly.

One thing I will confirm is that despite being a grandmaster with a rating over 2700, he does not have Caïssa's blessing. Though he does have Assïac's curse, which is quite similar to it.

As for the game, it features a Bertin gambit which is arguably just as aggressive as the Muzio gambit. I actually wrote this game back in Season 4, but decided to use it now. I also wanted to demonstrate how ruthless Tsar Grigori could be. Speaking of which, lets talk about his opponent, Frieda Rhodes.

フリーダ・ロードス (Frieda Rhodes) is how her name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is November 1st, which is the day the European Union was formed. Her rating of 1993 is a reference to the year the EU was formed as well.

Her favorite piece is the queen. Which is ironic, since it was a queen that ultimately mated her and resulted in her losing her free will.

She is obviously a high-ranking European official, however, she was not the greatest chess player. Now she'll be Tsar Grigori's proxy, meaning he'll have even more control over Europe.

Speaking of Europe, in this universe, Germany has become the German empire of Prussia, thanks to Red Reaper conquering it. And speaking of Red Reaper, it's now a race against time for Okisato to get back to London and get the other members of the chess club out of there, since he's the only one capable of beating Red Reaper.

As for the timeline of events, I'll confirm that Red Reaper called Tsar Grigori immediately following the match with Okisato. Their match took only 3 minutes, and Tsar Grigori arrived at Red Reaper's location 15 minutes later thanks to Svetlana's DESPER. His match took about 10 minutes. It then took Red Reaper about 5 minutes to "kill himself", summon the Ultima-master to get a new DESPER, and challenge the victim to a match. As for the match, it's a 1 minute bullet match, meaning it will be over quickly. Though once he finishes his match, it will take him 5 minutes to get a new DESPER again, meaning it essentially took him 40 minutes to get back to London and get an active DESPER.

One final thing I'll mention is that in the original draft, this chapter was originally Chapter 156, but I decided to move it up one space following the revisions. While Season 5 didn't get revised as much as say Season 4, there is still one very noteworthy revision which I'll discuss in the next commentary.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #153:

Time to talk about Chapter 153: Sir Grobhand vs Numakawa.
With a title like that, I'm sure you can guess this chapter's going to be cringe. At least the game was only 5 moves. But now, Numakawa looks like the big brain meme. Welp, at least I have a new game to add to my next top 10 most hated games list. Though the other game is a different story since it was a 3-check game.

As the name implies the goal is to either check your opponent 3 times or flat out checkmate them to win. Since Medeucesa got off-screened by Azenira, decided to at least have a game featuring her. I don't think I'll ever showcase a match featuring Azenira or Zago, but if this series gets a video game adaptation, you can bet players will get to play ever Zago and Azenira match. Prior to the revision, the game was originally played between Bette and Medeucesa, but for the revision, I decided to have it be between Medeucesa and Numakawa.

One thing I'll point out is that Sir Grobhand's rating of 1975 is a reference to the year Monty Python and the Holy Grail released. Speaking of Sir Grobhand, Sir Grobhand actually died in the original draft. The reason I decided to spare him here is simply because he's a somewhat funny character and while I did plan to replace him with a similar character, there's just no beating good ole "Sir Grobhand". While those characters I intended to replace him will still likely make their appearance, now they'll do it alongside Sir Grobhand.

As for the story, things will get interesting again when Okisato rematches Red Reaper. Now that he's beaten him once already, I'm sure he's got a better idea on how to beat him once more.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    [Game log #108]

Buwahahaha! Here's the game between Mimoko and Jester from Chapter 175. Since Jester cheated, I can't provide a coherent game log that showcases what he did. I can provide the main game without any cheating along with portions of the game after Jester cheated though. Mimoko's rating has also increased following her bout with Maestro Wiley Frisch at the end of Season 3. As for Jester's rating, his true elo would be around 0 or 100, but since he cheats, I listed it as "Buwahahaha".
