    Author's Commentary #292:

Time to talk about Chapter 292: Baron Buster Blitzhölle.
The big clash is finally here. This is why I made sure to introduce Diederich and his fantasy battlefield early in the arc as it was all for this moment. The Erza vs Laxus fight from Fairy Tail 100 Year Quest, notably the insert song that played during it, Beyond the Quest, was a large driving force of inspiration for this bout.

Funnily enough, the nature of the game itself went through a notable change. I originally had a game set aside that I planned to have be the game for this match, but changed it to a Baron Buster gambit one. It actually came by chance as I decided to play it randomly against the Viswanathan Anand bot on Chess.com, with assisted mode on, and won in 29 moves. That quickly got my creative juices flowing to produce the fight seen here, and it doesn't disappoint.

Diederich had the edge, but when playing Okisato, keeping the edge is always hard. And his arrogance got the better of him allowing Okisato to pounce and destroy him and his ego. Though him flying into the tables was all him. Though if a DESPER was activated, it would have been real. But since it wasn't and his actions disrupted plenty of games, disciplinary action is heading his way. In fact, I'll confirm it outright before it's revealed in the story that he's getting suspended from play for 3 games. This means Prussia can't have any members sit out until his ban is over lest they risk forfeiting a point in a match.

Red Reaper will naturally be pissed, but since teams that already played each other can't play each other again in the tournament, Japan doesn't need to worry about facing his wrath in the final round when DESPERs are allowed. And with Japan's victory, the 3rd round has come to a close. But the competition will only get harder as with this win, Japan is likely to next face one of the strongest teams in the tournament.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #290:

Time to talk about Chapter 290: Wiesława's frustration.
The Japan vs Poland match is officially over. Japan has yet again extended their perfect victory streak and against another strong team nonetheless. Even if Jadwiga had sat out, the results would have been the same.

As for the game, it's another London System one. I really do like that opening, and since it's a viable one at the top levels, Mimoko has no problem making it one of her go-to openings.

And now that the women's match is over, it's back over to the men's side where a thrilling finish awaits. On a separate but somewhat related note, I've been very busy with the art for all the key teams. The women's teams are all done and total over 50 teams, including Japan, while the men are just slightly over 10 teams, though my creative juices are flowing, so it's possible the final count will be higher, though not as high as the number of women's teams I did art for.

I'd also like to explain a general consensus I have for each team. If this ever gets a video game adaptation, many of those characters will be DSPCMs or SPCMs and thus have their own little side story of sorts for players to play through in order to get some more background into the characters. Some would be locked behind story progression, but most would be available as soon as you unlock the ability to challenge them.

As such, I like to have backstories for the characters planned beforehand before I make the teams. They don't need to be fully written, but a rough idea is needed. For example, a DSPCM, who has yet to be revealed in the story, would have a side story focused on reigning in Allura, as she would be her agent.

Speaking of DSPCMs, I've been retroactively making some of the characters like Stressaður DSPCMs. Stressaður was originally planned to be a DSPCM, but not until after the Chess Olympics were over. I decided to make him one before that though, so that's now the new canon. However, there will still be some DSPCMs that get their position following the Chess Olympics. I'll also confirm that Hans-Ulrich, Magdalena, Gloria, Retskcirb, Julia, Maila, and Urzula are all DSPCMs. Jadwiga and Wiesława are also competing to get the DSPCM slot for Warsaw, though the loser will likely become DSPCM of Krakow so both could be considered future DSPCMs.

With all the new characters being introduced, it's naturally become a difficult juggling act as there are only 11 possible teams for each Japanese team to face, and I have way more than that. Some of the teams Japan won't face will also have characters that will play key roles later in the story. As such, you can expect me to try and squeeze in as many characters as I can in the downtime chapters in between rounds, as I want all these characters to get a spotlight.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #287:

Time to talk about Chapter 287: The Jadwiga gambit.
If anyone thought Jadwiga's suffering was over, you were wrong. Now she has PTSD and will forever be associated with this horrible opening. Though I'm sure you can already predict it, I'll say it anyway; if this ever gets a video game adaptation, you would be able to play the Jadwiga gambit against her which would cause her to play like a 100-elo player, and best of all, she'd always refuse to capture your queen and blunder into mate quickly.

Originally, I planned to have Jadwiga fall in love with Okisato, much to his dismay and develop a masochistic persona. But I decided against it, opting instead to have her remain haughty and arrogant. I feel it better suits her character and makes her stand out more, though obviously this humiliation will have an effect on her. Though I will confirm she will pretty much act the same. Though if Poland lose the match, she'll be going bald as punishment.

Speaking of the match, things are briefly going to hop over to the men's side before returning to the women's. Unlike the previous two rounds, the women will finish their round 3 match before the men. This is mainly because the Okisato vs Diederich fight is the marquee match-up of the round.

While the men were always set to play Prussia, I was actually unsure of who to have the women play. Poland was the original pick, but I wasn't sure what to do with them, until I managed to get that game you saw between Okisato and Jadwiga. That game helped me decide what to do with Poland. And speaking of which, let's do the bios for the rest of the Polish team.

ヴィエスワヴァ・ヴィクシュタウチュチー (Wiesława Wykształciuchy) is how Wiesława's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is March 24th, which she shares with Polish grandmaster, Monika Soćko.

Her favorite piece is the queen, due to it's power on the board.

ウルズラ・フラタウ (Urzula Flatau) is how Urzula's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is October 28th, which she shares with Polish international master, Alina Kashlinskaya.

Her favorite piece is the queen as she looks up to Jadwiga.

ゾシア・ジェウワコフ (Zosia Żewłakow) is how Zosia's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is April 26th, which she shares with Polish international master, Oliwia Kiołbasa.

Her favorite piece is the queen, as it's both the moth powerful piece on the board, and representative of Jadwiga.

Wiesława and Maria are both the daughters of Poland's president, who is from a rival faction from Jadwiga's father, the prime minister. Even though Jadwiga is ideologically different from her father, she also despises the Polish president as well. This tends to put her at odds with the Wykształciuchys.

However, Wiesława can make sound judgement calls and analyze things without bias. And as just shown, her teammates should have listened to her as now Jadwiga will have a major weakness for the rest of the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
