    Author's Commentary #344:

Time to talk about Chapter 344: Baltic Balkan brawl.
It's Estonia vs Serbia in this epic clash, meaning Õnne-chan is back. It's been a while since we last saw her, but before I start talking too much about her, let's do the bios for all the new characters.

ゴラナ・ペトロヴィッチ (Gorana Petrović) is how Gorana's name would be spelled in katakana. Горана Петровић (Gorana Petrović) is how it would be spelled in Serbian (Cyrillic).

Her birthday is May 26th, which she shares with Serbian international master, Teodora Injac.

Her favorite piece is the rook, since it's built like a mountain.

Gorana is currently the highest rated player on the Serbian women's team. She enjoys the outdoors and hiking in the mountains.

スラジャナ・マジャール (Slađana Madžar) is how Slađana's name would be spelled in katakana. Слађана Маџар (Slađana Madžar) is how it would be spelled in Serbian (Cyrillic).

Her birthday is March 18th, which she shares with Serbian women's grandmaster, Svetlana Prudnikova.

Her favorite piece is the pawn, because she likes round things.

Slađana's main selling point is her design. That's pretty much it. Though I do have an idea what to do with her character.

ニコリーナ・コジッチ (Nikolina Kozić) is how Nikolina's name would be spelled in katakana. Николина Козић (Nikolina Kozić) is how it would be spelled in Serbian (Cyrillic).

Her birthday is February 15th, which is Statehood day in Serbia.

Her favorite piece is the queen, since she sees herself as Serbia's warrior queen.

Originally, Nikolina started out as nothing more than a character based off of Nino Nakano from the Quintessential Quintuplets. She didn't really have any defining traits, until I decided to add the Bosnians to the story, which in turn, led to me further fleshing out all the Balkan nations. As a result, Nikolina is now one of the darker characters in the series. This largely stems from the fact that she was orphaned as an infant during the Yugoslav wars, which led to her gaining an unbridled hatred for Albanians, as it was Albanian forces that killed her family and nearly her as well.

ヨバナ・ヤニッチ (Jovana Janić) is how Jovana's name would be spelled in katakana. Јована Јанић (Jovana Janić) is how it would be spelled in Serbian (Cyrillic).
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is December 6th, which she shares with American poker player and Chess master, Fan Harrington.

Her favorite piece is the king, since she believes it's the most valued piece.

Jovana is a poker player who also decided to dabble i chess. There are actually quite a few professional chess players that play poker as well, so it made sense to include such a character here. And since Jovana was a blank slate, it made sense to give her that backstory and personality.

Now getting back to the main topic, since it had been a while since Õnne had last shown up, I felt it was time to check back in with her. I also wanted to showcase her in a game taking place in the main tournament, which is why I went with this.

And speaking of the game, it features a Villemson gambit, which can be considered a delayed Bongcloud if the main line is followed. As shown in the game, it has some tricks and traps, which combined with Õnne's prowess, made taking down Slađana look easy.

Of course, the match is far from over, as now it's time to see how some of the other players play. One final thing I'll mention is that originally I was just going to feature a game with Õnne, but decided to do a full match. Lostening to the Estonian folk song, Kui mina ükskord noores eas, võtsin vana naise is the main reason why, as it not only gave me the inspiration on what to do with the Estonian team, but I even went and gave Estonia a men's team when I originally had no such plans. Just goes to show how much music can influence me when I'm writing this series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:344

Good question. In terms of teams that will end of facing Japan, there's a few, but said teams are still present in the story. In terms of countries participating as a whole, that's still up in the air, as I'm still finalizing what countries will appear. I don't want to reveal everything outright because of spoilers, but I will say that I'll reveal more on what teams I originally had planned to face Japan as the story progresses. The tournament still has 5 rounds to go after all, so it's possible I might decide to change something last minute. On that note though, I will reveal that most of the last minute changes have generally been on the men's side. This is largely due to the fact that aside from a handful of teams such as India, Prussia, Denmark, and a future opponent which I won't reveal just yet, I didn't really have a clear vision for who the men would play, but obviously that's changed. Ironically enough, the 7th round is the only one left that I'm still finalizing. Every other round opponent is set in stone.

But to offer one final bit of insight, music tends to be the big source of inspiration for characters and storylines. Had I not listened to the Bosnian folk song, Bosanska Artiljerija, I doubt I would have had Bosnia and Herzegovina even in the story, or even bothered further developing the other Balkan nations already present. But luckily, I clicked on the video and got inspired by artiljerija so much, we got both amazing games and memorable characters. A different folk song I listened to also ended up finalizing a storyline, but I'll talk more about that when it's revealed in the story.

    Chapter:343

    Author's Commentary #343:

Time to talk about Chapter 343: Mimoko vs Xiu.
What a game that was. Mimoko had to work for this one, but she got it done in the end, and Xiu couldn't be angrier. But her little temper tantrum will cost her team, as now she'll be suspended for the 7th round. This also marks the start of Xiu's fierce and contentious rivalry with Mimoko.

And to begin such an occasion, I naturally had to make sure the inaugural match between the two didn't disappoint. Of all the round 6 games, this was the one I probably had to work on the most, as getting the game just right was essential. A key part of that was the game staying relatively even up to the 26th move, but the real meat of it was the 28th move when Mimoko found d5. That was the only winning move as knight f6 would have brought things back to even. And after that, Xiu was completely dumbfounded and easy pickings for Mimoko.

For the Chess Olympics, there are some match-ups I had planned before writing the arc, and some I decided on shortly before writing them into the story. Japan vs France, Japan vs Iceland, Japan vs Italy, Japan vs New Kingdom of Simien, Japan vs Mongolia, and Japan vs Bosnia and Herzegovina were all unplanned before the arc began, while Japan vs Denmark, Japan vs Poland, Japan vs German Empire of Prussia, both Japan vs India matches, and Japan vs China were all planned. In the original plans, Xiu was originally going to hold Mimoko to a draw, while Bao beat Tenju, leaving it to Daria and Iori to win their matches and get Japan the win. Obviously, I reversed that decision, for a few reasons.

First off, I want Japan to dominate, which will make their eventual clash with some of the other nations also with perfect victories all the more tense. And second, Xiu losing was better for the overall story. Now her ego has been shattered along with her mask, revealing her true face to the world. And to pour more salt in the wound, Mimoko does get a badge and rematch rights since Xiu is an SPCM. I also enjoyed writing Xiu's shift in attitude, especially after Mimoko found d5. Daria may not have gotten to humiliate Xiao Lin as much as she wanted to, but beating her and her team 4-0 is most certainly satisfactory for her.

Now both Japanese teams have won their matches, meaning Ginji's scheme has been completely foiled. Of course, this means he'll likely get bolder with future schemes going forward. And while team Japan has finished all their games, round 6 is far from over. Thus begins the theory-crafting as to who the teams could end up facing in round 7, and what teams and characters will be showcased in these upcoming chapters.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:343

    Author's Commentary #342:

Time to talk about Chapter 342: John Tracy vs Bosnian Artiljerija.
The game between Okisato and Miralem is finally here, and it doesn't disappoint. Not only was the game great, but Okisato even got in a diss track catered specifically towards Miralem. To be honest, Okisato's multilingual disses are quickly becoming one of the most fun things to write.

The game was also fun to write, as there was non-stop action and an "ARTILJERIJA!" from Miralem and of course, Okisato's diss track. The more aggressive nature of this game was actually the main reason I chose it to be the Okisato vs Miralem game. While I liked the Balkan gambit game, I felt it was more suited for Tvrtko, due to the less aggressive playstyle featured in said game. Miralem's style is more aggressive than Tvrtko's, so I decided to search for another game instead, mainly one where Miralem could do an "ARTILJERIJA!" capture, which was not really present in the Balkan gambit game.

Thus, I challenged the Chess.com bots, and got the game that made it into the final product. I'd never known about the John Tracy gambit prior to this, and with the name it had, and the way the game played out, it was the perfect fit to include it in the series.

And now, Japan has beaten Bosnia and Herzegovina, meaning it's back to the women's side to see how Mimoko's game will conclude. Ginji's scheme has failed, but there is still a chance he gets a consolation prize in the form of Xiu preventing Mimoko from winning. All I'll say on the game, is that I feel it will be one of the most memorable moments in the entire series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
