    Author's Commentary #107:

Time to talk about Chapter 107: Tennison's ICBM.
Carol's getting a chance to shine and showcase one the more fun gambits, the Tennison gambit. Nicknamed the ICBM gambit, this gambit, if successful, nets you the enemy queen and puts the enemy king in a more precarious position. Speaking of the bird that got blasted in the face with Carol's ICBM, let's talk about him.

エドワード・アレン・ジキル (Edward Allen Jekyll) is how his name is written in katakana. He takes inspiration from both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven.

His birthday is January 29th which is when The Raven was first published.

His favorite piece is the knight because it's the closest piece to resembling a raven, according to him.

While it might seem a bit of a stretch to have a 400-rated player like Carol beat someone rated over 2000 like Jekyll, she managed to win thanks to Jekyll forgetting about the Tennison gambit and falling victim to it. After that, he completely lost it and hasted his demise with blunder after blunder. Carol also has some talent too. She's not in the same tier as Mimoko, Okisato, and Iori, but she's learning the game quickly and could easily become a top player in due time.

Since the Tennison gambit is so satisfying to pull off, I wanted it to be featured in the series, but since advanced level players tend to thwart it, someone like Mimoko likely wouldn't play it. Thus, I decided to have Carol play it.

On a separate note, the cover has been updated and now features Iori. Not to mention, some art of Okisato and Peter has been uploaded to the showcase. I also plan to update the Desperado artwork soon so look forward to that as well.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #105:

Time to talk about Chapter 105: Giraffe attack.
This chapter introduces Carol, who's essentially the American equivalent of Iori, aside from secretly being a psychopath. Her dialog is deliberately misspelled and full of grammatical errors in order to illustrate the fact that she's speaking broken Japanese. But in reality, it was all an act as she's actually very fluent in Japanese. She also has some Japanese lineage too as her great grandmother was from Japan.

キャロル・"セス"・クック (Carol "Cece" Cooke) is how her name is written in katakana.

Her birthday is October 6th. I chose the date at random so there's no real significance behind why this date is his birthday. However, it is worth mentioning that while I did choose this date at random, it is also the birthday of Armeninan-American grandmaster, Levon Aronian.

Like Iori, her favorite piece is the knight, mainly because it can jump around the board. She actually watches lots of chess videos in order to learn cool moves, but has found that some of them can be easily countered by high-level players resulting in her usually losing games against them.

Speaking of the games, the inspiration for them came after I watched a video by Fischy Chess called "Every weird chess openings explain in 15 minutes (compilation)". I don't think the Omega Bongcloud is officially recognized, but it is similar to a crazy opening Magnus Carlson once played. Basically, the move involves you moving your king to d1 the long way by going first to f2 then looping around to d1. Iori was unable to pull the move off due to playing Mimoko.

The Giraffe attack on the other hand is in fact a real opening. It was actually thanks to the aforementioned video that I learned about it and the blunder white can fall into if they play the opening. This is also the first win by resignation game in the series. While wins by resignation are common both in real life and the universe this story takes place in, wins by resignation will be rare and won't occur unless it's a non-DESPER match. If I end up doing a proper tournament arc, that's where you'll likely see lots of wins by resignations. As for why Carol resigned, she would have been down a queen and against someone like Mimoko, that's game over.

As for the bet, both her and Iori were planning on doing it from the start and simply wanted an excuse to justify it as a punishment. Though if Iori played seriously, the results could have been much different.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:105

    Author's Commentary #103:

Time to talk about Chapter 103: Closure.
This chapter showcases quite a few things. First, it shows what became of Safumi and Michiko following the end of the fallen maestro arc. Second, it showcases a bit of how Daria truly felt about the entire ordeal. And third, it shows just how irredeemable Michiko truly is.

First off, let's talk a bit more about Michiko. Raymond essentially plans to reduce her to nothing but a brain in a jar. He doesn't intend to let her die, both to make her suffer and because killing her could allow her soul to simply escape to one of her proxies. Her loss to Okisato is currently what prevents her from taking control of her proxies, however, she still has some connections to them and can swap bodies with them if given the opportunity. For example, should Safumi step outside the WWCF HQ, Michiko would be able to swap bodies with her. She could also swap bodies with Doraaki, but is currently unable to due to the specifics of Doraaki's punishment preventing her from doing so immediately.

As for Okisato's comment regarding her pawns, that was a concept I decided to go with while I was writing Season 2. First off, the fact that Michiko had all her proxies go bald was not just to satisfy Ai's desires, but to also denote their status as pawns. To recap, Ai, Xiao Lin, Taira, Safumi, Mizuse, Doraaki, Tenju, and the mysterious hooded woman were all Michiko's pawns. That doesn't mean they were all her proxies though, as Tenju was moreso manipulated by her rather than outright controlled by her, while Xiao Lin colluded via her own free will. While Safumi and Doraaki are free from their brainwashing, they aren't completely free from Michiko yet.

Raymond has the power to view DESPER wagers thanks to both his authority as WWCF president. As such, he was able to access the match data and learn the exact language of each wager. This is why he gave Okisato such specific instructions on how to save Daria when he faced off against Michiko. Maestro's and WWCF officials can also view match data, but only Raymond and possibly the executive board members are able to view EVERYTHING.

As for Daria herself, while she's mainly been bottling up her emotions, she truly is devastated over Kotora's death. When she first heard about it, she cried her eyes dry, though made sure to do it when Mimoko wasn't around. She was also unsure if Michiko was truly acting on her own will and had wanted to speak with her face to face in order to confirm things for herself. Upon seeing Michiko's true nature, she realized that Michiko was never truly her friend and lost any remorse she had for her over her current predicament.

As for Okisato, he seems to have a history with Raymond. All I'll say on that is more will be revealed as the story continues.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:103

    Author's Commentary #150:

Time to talk about the Season 5 intro chapter, Chapter 150: The Red Reaper of Prussia.

We're shifting back to Fairy league, however, the main focus is not on them, but on the new long-term antagonist, Red Reaper. He actually came to be mainly because I watched too much Youjo Senki. And yes, I had Jingo Jungle playing when I wrote this chapter and commentary. While this was originally his debut chapter, I ended up retconning things to have him appear in Chapter 25 back in Season 1, as well as in Chapter 66 of Season 2. This chapter was also originally part of Season 4, but after I revised Season 4, I decided to have this serve as the intro to Season 5, as the original intro chapter for Season 5, A WWCF meeting, now Chapter 131: Emergency meeting, is part of Season 4. The swap made sense as at the time, I only posted the Chapter to debut Red Reaper, and it helps each season flow better. Now let's talk about Charlie Beagle.

チャーリー・ビーグル (Charlie Beagle) is how his name is spelled in katakana. He's an obvious homage to Snoopy from Peanuts who infamously fights against the Red Baron.

His birthday is October 2nd which was the day Peanuts first launched.

He's never played chess, so he doesn't really have a favorite piece, but it would probably be the knight.

レッド・リーパー・フォン・リヒトホーフェン (Red Reaper von Richtofen) is how his name is spelled in katakana. His original name was Frederick von Richtofen, however, he adopted the name, Red Reaper upon becoming an undead lich. フレデリック・フォン・リヒトホーフェン (Fredrick Richthofen) is how his old name would be spelled in katakana. Alternatively, he can also be referred to as
赤い死神 (Akai shinegami) which is the Japanese translation of Red Reaper.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is May 2nd which he shares with the Red Baron himself, Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen. Obviously, Red Reaper is literally based off him, and might even be his ghost in this universe. His rating of 2780 is also a nice reference to the fact that the Red Baron shot down 80 planes during his career.

His favorite piece is the bishop, mainly because he believes they are the most fighter-plane-like piece on the board. Though the king is a close second since he views himself as king of the skies.

Red Reaper's actually the head enforcer of the Desperado league and the member with the most kills. He prefers to have the DESPER matches take place in the skies, but he also enjoys crushing people in matches on the ground too. As shown at the end of Season 2, he's also seemingly not bound by the rule that prevents Desperados from killing each other. More will be revealed about him as the story progresses.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:150

    Oct 29, 2024

    Author's Commentary #100:

Time to talk about the Season 4 intro chapter, Chapter 100: Chess at the beach.
Originally written as a special chapter made to commemorate 100 chapters of the series, I decided to instead make it serve as the intro to Season 4, since it is 100% canon to the story. Speaking of which, Season 4 has now been completely revised, much like Seasons 1-3. This was easily a much more daunting undertaking, but now I'm satisfied with the quality of Season 4 as I feel things flow better now.

As for the game, it's actually one of the fastest possible ways to get an en passant checkmate. The characters that appeared in this chapter will also reappear again in the story. Speaking of which, let's talk a bit about some of them, starting with Jackie Egghead.

ジャッキー・エッグヘッド (Jackie Egghead) is how her name is spelled in katakana. While she is academically gifted, she's essentially a female version of Numakawa, in other words an idiot. The same can be said for her friends.

Her birthday is February 15th. I chose this date at random so there's no real significance behind why I chose the date to be her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the queen, since it's the most powerful piece on the board. She actually has a tendency to avoid queen trading at all costs and will sometimes outright resign if her queen is captured due to a blunder. Next up is Olga Obrazovanshchina.

オルガ・オブラゾヴァンシチナ (Olga Obrazovanshchina) is how her name is spelled in katakana while Ольга Образованщина (Olga Obrazovanshchina) is how her name is spelled in Russian. Оbrazovanshchina is actually the Russian equivalent of the word, "egghead". Funnily enough, all the other members of the group have a similar naming scheme.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

She actually knows Svetlana due to being the daughter of a Russian dignitary. She is currently studying at Stanford, but remains close with Svetlana.

Her birthday is September 14th. I chose this date at random so there's no real significance behind why I chose this date to be her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the queen due to it being the most powerful piece on the board. Unlike Jackie though, she isn't afraid to trade queens and will only resign after blundering her queen if she feels there's no hope of her winning.

While the college girls aren't full-fledged Desperado members, they are closely affiliated with both them and the WWCF. They'll also be semi-recurring characters going forward so expect them to pop up in the story every now and then.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
