    Author's Commentary #138:

Time to talk about Chapter 138: Killer king swap.
There is quite a lot to talk about, so first up, behind the scenes stuff. This chapter was actually one of the first chapters written for Season 4. Much like Season 3, I started by writing the final fight and working my way back. That likely explains why the pacing felt a bit off at times in the original draft, though I do feel me rushing at times was more due to burnout if anything. This is why I decided to rectify things with a revision as now the story flows much better.

Second, let's talk about the game. Believe it or not, I ended up completely rewriting the game. The original still featured a Bongcloud, king and queen swap, and ended on the 69th move with Pewler left with just his king. However, I then learned that it was possible to checkmate with the king. On Chess.com, there is an achievement known as "killer king" which you get for delivering a checkmate with the king. Believe it or not, this is possible, but only via a discovered checkmate. When I learned about it, I knew I had to rewrite the game to include it. It took a while, but it paid off. And speaking of killer kings, the title of the chapter is a reference to the Chess.com achievement of the same name.

And finally, Pewler is dead. I guess you could say he bit the dust. The key to Iori's victory was Pewler underestimating just how sadistic she really was. In fact, this was the first time Pewler truly lost his composure. But since Pewler's dead, that means it's time to reveal the sin he embodied.

This was actually tough as I went back and forth between pride and greed. Ultimately, I went with pride/hubris as his sin. This is mainly because he's overconfident and thinks he has control of everything. He also has some similarities to Masayoshi Shido from Person 5, who, you guessed it, embodies the sin of pride. While he also displayed some tendencies worthy of making him embody the sin of greed, I feel pride fits him better due to his massive hubris, though feel free to argue otherwise if you think greed fits him better.

Now that everyone's back safely, they'll be subjected to Mimoko's slaps and tearful embrace. However, there's still a few loose ends to wrap up before Season 4 ends, notably challenging Maestro Frisch and resolving some issues with his SPCMs. There is also a mystery that needs to be solved, so see if you can solve it before the answer to it is revealed in the final chapter of the season.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:138

    Author's Commentary #136:

Time to talk about Chapter 136: Grandstanding.
If you didn't already hate Pewler, this chapter will sure as hell make you hate him. Not only did he take down Carol, but he put on a whole kabuki theater show in order to garner sympathy from the public. This man truly is a vile manipulator.

As for why the president and vice-president just flat out resigned and handed Pewler the reigns of power, he manipulated them into handing him the reigns of power. He did seek to beat them in DESPER battle to get them completely under his control, but was unable to due to the heavy security detail each one had. While he could theoretically force the president into a DESPER match even if his security detail is present, said guards would simply arrest Pewler following the match even if he did win. Thus, he kept his public image and his image before the president and vice-president clean in order to fully manipulate them.

Now that Pewler's the president, he can do whatever he wants following his acceptance speech. The only good news is that Mimoko's back home, but sadly Pewler will abuse his authority to try and extradite her in order to imprison her for the rest of her life. Thing's aren't looking good for our heroes, but the season is still not over yet. While the heroine, Mimoko, might have been fooled, the sadistic anti-hero, Iori, isn't playing around.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:136

    Author's Commentary #134:

Time to talk about Chapter 134: A moment of peace.
Originally, the chapter was called, The morning after, witth the title of the chapter being a clever pun on the word, "mourning" as Carol and Mimoko are mourning Iori, since they think she's dead. It could also be taken at face value since the chapter originally took place the morning after the girls were attacked. Since the girls are now back in Japan and it's evening, I had to change the title to, A moment of peace.

As for the chapter, it mainly focuses on wrapping up Carol's backstory. The most notable part being her history with LinZay. All I'll say on LinZay is that she has already made an appearance in the story and as such, I won't give a bio on her, since I've actually already done so. I will give a bio on Carol's boyfriend, Christian though.

クリスチャン・バーンズ (Christian Barnes) is how his name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is February 7th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater meaning behind why this date is his birthday.

He never played chess, though if he did, his favorite piece would likely be the rook.

Now we're approaching the big confrontation of the season. It is worth noting that unlike in the original, Pewler now shows up in Japan to confront the girls. He got there in the same way the London Desperados were able to get to Okinawa. Believe it or not, I originally planned to just have the girls get warped straight to America instead of London first, but I felt it was the better choice narratively as the Fairy league will play a major role in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:134

    Author's Commentary #133:

Time to talk about Chapter 133: Collective responsibility.
This chapter once again hammers home the point that Iori is an absolute psychopath. She not only took out Horner, but everyone that was a part of the mob, all by tricking them into saying that they were united with Horner as one, thus the DESPER registered that statement as them consenting to being part of the bet, and since Horner lost, they too lost. As for why Iori chose a tornado, she wanted to both make the deaths look somewhat natural, and she just wanted an up close view of someone getting killed by a tornado.

As for the game, Iori goes for maximum disrespect by opening with the Van't Kruijs Bongcloud and once again, besting her opponent. In the original draft for the game, I actually had her capture all the pieces, but that game didn't have a Bongcloud in it. Thus, I decided to go with the Bongcloud game instead since I felt it handed Horner a more humiliating loss. And now that all threats are gone, Iori is safe, and has warped away to a currently undisclosed location.

It is worth noting that she simply could have killed Horner and warped away, but because she's so sadistic, she decided to kill all present in order to leave no witnesses. The place she warped to is also the reason Horner went so pale when he saw the conditions for the wager. Had he known Iori was that maniacal, he wouldn't have engaged her back at the secret puzzle cafe.

One final thing I'll point out is that Phantom was the one that stepped in to stop Imelda from killing Iori and Carol on the spot. While Horner likely would have tried to have Imelda kill Iori if he knew of her true nature, Phantom being present would have prevented that anyway.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:133

    Author's Commentary #131:

Time to talk about Chapter 131: Emergency meeting.
Originally the intro chapter for Season 5, I decided to swap things around and have this chapter occur in Season 4 as I felt it made more sense plot-wise. Many important long-term characters are introduced here. First up is Amelia Stavanger, the maestro of Norway.

アメリア・スタヴァンゲル (Amelia Stavanger) is how Amelia's name is spelled in katakana. There's actually an interesting story behind her, as she was the character I decided would be one of the first players would meet if this series ever got a video game adaptation.

    Her birthday is September 23rd.

Her favorite piece is the queen, though she refuses to elaborate why.

As a brief aside, if this series ever got a video game adaptation, Amelia would actually be one of the first characters the player would encounter as they're getting set up. In the game. My idea is that for a tutorial, Amelia will ask the player how good they are at chess. If they answer, "new player" they'd get a brief overview of the game and play Himitsudono with assistance. If they answer "experienced" they skip the tutorial and jump straight into the tutorial match against Himitsudono with no help given. But if they answer "I'm a grandmaster" they are prompted with one final chance to reconsider before being forced to play Amelia, who's ai would secretly be rated 2700 for this match alone. Losing or drawing would result in a loss and the player being forced to go through both the beginner tutorial and the tutorial battle against Himitsudono as punishment. Brief aside over, lets talk about the other maestro, Ian Kimovich of Russia.

イアン・キモビッチ (Ian Kimovich) is how his name is spelled in katakana. Йен Кимович is how I believe his name would be spelled in Russian.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is April 13th which he shares with 13th chess world champion, as well as one of the greatest chess players of all time, Garry Kasparov. His name is also a nod to Kasparov as Kimovich is actually Kasparov's middle name.

His favorite piece is the queen, as that is the piece that has helped him win so many victories.

With this, 5 of the 7 secret chess maestros have now been revealed. I will say that one of the two yet to be revealed was present at the meeting, but did not get a spotlight. Thus, their proper reveal will come much later in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:131

    Oct 31, 2024

    Author's Commentary #130:

Time to talk about Chapter 130: The sadism of humans.
Obviously, the key part of this chapter is Iori's speech on sadism. It's actually something I've had cooking for a while, so I'm glad it's finally time to publish it. The speech perfectly showcases Iori's worldview, and shows how much she believes sadism is a biological human trait. I was honestly thinking of just having the chapter focus around the speech, but it would have been too short so I decided to include some more content.

Speaking of which, Pewler's right hand man, Jacque Horner has made his debut. He's the chief editor of the accredited newspaper, The Blue Hornet. However, he's the complete opposite of journalistic integrity and frequently uses the paper's status as an "unbiased medium" to slander and demonize all who Pewler order him to.

ジャック・ホーナー (Jacque Horner) is how his name is spelled in katakana. His name is obviously a pun on Jack Horner from the Little Jack Horner nursery rhyme. I originally based his design off of Bruno Bangnyfe from Burn the Witch, but later redesigned him to look more like Duke Everlue from Fairy Tail.

His birthday is November 3rd, which is the day the paper with the infamous "Dewey defeats Truman" headline was released. This is fitting considering the headline was incorrect, and Horner often writes incorrect articles.

His favorite piece is the bishop, as he believes himself to be Pewler's bishop that spreads his gospel via the press.

Things look to get serious, but before the matches begin, things will briefly shift over to Daria's side in order to get an update on Katie's status and the WWCF's thoughts on all that has happened thus far.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:130

    Oct 31, 2024

    Author's Commentary #129:

Time to talk about Chapter 129: Mastermind hippie.
As stated in my previous commentary, Katie is essentially Yosuke Hirata from Classroom of the elite. Her backstory I decided to keep since it helps better flesh out her character, as well as Sandy. In the original draft, Sherbert was actually the one that saved Katie, but I decided to change it to Sandy as I felt it made more sense for her to be the one to diffuse the situation like that.

As for the game, I actually attempted to make it a Muzio gambit game, but the CPU denied me that. However, the game still ended up turning out great, so I decided to use it for the match.

Speaking of the match, it looked like Katie suffered a DESPER penalty when she lost. Though if a DESPER is in play, then that would mean someone there is secretly a Desperado. This actually segways into a major change I made from the original. As I mentioned in a previous commentary, Imelda was originally an SPCM, however, I ended up killing her off in her debut match. Her death was meant to introduce readers to the fact that there was a Desperado amongst the American SPCMs, however, that actually led to a problem later down the line. Shortly after Imelda's death, the DESPER was used again, this time via Iori secretly using the DESPER key to make the Desperado activate their DESPER for her match against Katie.

The problem with that is later down the line, I decided that not only could DESPERs not be activated within secret puzzle cafes, but that the DESPER keys would force the one holding the DESPER into a match. I guess you can take this statement as confirmation that KAtie wasn't the Desperado in the original draft, but getting back on topic, I was forced to change things up in the revisions.

To counter the first point, I took advantage of the large size of Mariano's secret puzzle cafe to introduce the concept that there was a small portion of it where a DESPER could be activated. And for the second, I decided to have this match be the only one where a DESPER was used.

As a result, instead of stripping and dancing nude like she did in the original, Katie finds herself on the verge of death, as the punishment for losing was simply, "to bleed". This is actually similar to the fate that befell Imelda, though unlike Imelda, the Desperado didn't state that she'd "die if she lost". There is a plot reason for that, which will be revealed later in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:129

    Oct 31, 2024

    Author's Commentary #128:

Time to talk about Chapter 128: Tense atmosphere.
In case it wasn't obvious, Iori is more of an anti-hero than hero. While she might have stopped killing, her psychopathic mind remains intact. It's possible she might actually be one of the smartest characters in the series, but that remains to be seen. Now let's talk about some of the other SPCMs. First up is Sherbert.

ミリラニ・"シャーバート"・パイナ (Mililani "Sherbert" Paina) is how Sherbert's name is spelled in katakana. She hails from Hawaii and has been making video content for a few years now. Her last name is actually Hawaiian for "pineapple". Sherbert is actually her stage name, and the reason she chose it was because she really likes eating rainbow sherbet ice cream.

Her birthday is August 21st, which is the day Hawaii became a US state.

Her favorite piece is the knight, mainly because she likes it's wild movements.

While she claims to be a "wholesome" content creator, she used to do far more unwholesome things like surfing down an erupting volcano topless. Now on to Katie.

ケイティ・ノックス (Katie Knox) is how Katie's name is written in katakana. She was originally intended to just be a pure chatterbox, but at the last minute, I decided to make her more like Yosuke Hirata from Clasroom of the elite.

Her birthday is September 1st which she shares with Yosuke Hirata from Classroom of the elite.

Her favorite piece is the knight, mainly because she likes distracting her mind thinking about how many different places it can move to.

Finally, there's Sandy Shores. サンディ・ショアズ (Sandy Shores) is how her name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is June 21st, which is one of the dates the summer solstice in the Northern hemisphere can fall on.

Her favorite piece is the pawn, mainly because there's so many of them. Sandy is often the chill and cool member of the American SPCMs. She doesn't get mad a lot, though that doesn't mean she can't get mad.

And with that, that's the bios for all the American SPCMs. They may not have as much of a focus in this as their Japanese counterparts did in Season 3, but they still will have long-term roles in the grander story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:128

    Oct 31, 2024

    Author's Commentary #127:

Time to talk about Chapter 127: One annoying asshole.
Though first, I think we need to call the fire department because Iori just scorched Clifford's ass with some of the sickest burns. All joking aside, I do love how Iori completely asserts dominance over Clifford and puts him in his place. Clifford, was designed to be a one-dimensional hatable antagonist, but it's only now that it's revealed he's also an egotist. Iori was spot on with all her insults.

As for the game, I had a lot of fun writing it. Considering how many Bongcloud variations have already been in the series, it was natural that the Queen's Bongcloud opening would get a spotlight. I also loved how the game ended with the pawn at d5 being pivotal to Clifford's defeat. Now let's get his bio out of the way.

クリフォード・グラスブロワー (Clifford Glassblower) is how his name is spelled in katakana. He's actually based off of the character Juji Sazan from Sentai Daishikkaku.

His birthday is January 11th. The reason for that is the date the chapter that saw Juji's debut was released.

His favorite piece is the queen, mainly because he worships it as the most powerful piece on the board.

And before we end, I also want to talk about Sheila and the brand new character, Hazel Hemmings. Sheila is the granddaughter of Wiley and as such, has tried her best to distance herself from him, mainly to improve her own life. This is why she ended up getting a bunch of tattoos and picking up vaping.

シーラ・フリッシュ (Sheila Frisch) is how Sheila's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is January 7th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

As for her favorite piece, she actually doesn't have one. The reason why is because she hates chess. Though if she did have a favorite, it would likely be the pawn.

ヘーゼル・ヘミングス (Hazel Hemmings) is how Hazel's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is December 2nd. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this day is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the bishop, mainly because she's also religious.

Hazel takes the cake as being the most underdeveloped character in the series. To be fair, it makes sense as her whole purpose was to replace Imelda as SPCM. To try and make her stand out a bit more from the others, I had her be a Raticinatio party supporter rather than a Misericordia one like most of the others.

Speaking of witch, I feel I should mention that while subtle, I've now changed the state Wiley represents in the senate from Kansas to Missouri. This is because St. Louis is considered the chess capitol of the US. I've also shuffled around some of the places the SPCMs hail from. Sheila is now from St. Louis instead of Kansas, while Clifford is now from Washington DC instead of Seattle. The others are unchanged with Hazel now representing New Orleans, which is actually where chess legend Paul Morphy was born and raised. It's also where Peter lives, so it made sense to have a secret puzzle cafe be there.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:127

    Oct 31, 2024

    Author's Commentary #126:

Time to talk about Chapter 126: An unpleasant encounter.
Turns out the cabby was actually an SPCM named Mariano Mario. Before I talk about him, I want to talk about an important change that has occurred in the revision, that being the fact that Imelda is no longer an SPCM.

There were multiple reasons for this, with the top one being that she was just so unlikable, I felt having her be an SPCM would drag down the reputation of the other American SPCMs. I also couldn't see Wiley being OK with having her be one, as while he begrudgingly did allow someone who is politically opposed to him, but good at chess, be one, Imelda is at best an intermediate and far too toxic as she'll descend into a petty tantrum at the smallest of things. There's also a more spoilery reason I decided to boot her from the American SPCM lineup, but I'll discuss that in a future commentary. Now let's talk about Mariano.

マリアーノ・マリオ (Mariano Mario) is how his name is spelled in katakana. He's obviously a reference to Super Mario.

His birthday is March 10th, since March 10th is Mario day.

His favorite piece is the knight, mainly because it can jump over the other pieces, much like Mario jumps over enemies. And to further the Mario references, his rating is actually 1981, the year Mario first made his debut in Donkey Kong.

As for the hotel, it is heavily based off the New York Marriott Marquis hotel in Times Square. For the cafe itself, I wanted to have it be more out in the open and work more like a members-only restaurant. This is why I had it be in plain sight, with the only requirement for entering it being that you have a WWCF card and rating.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
