    Author's Commentary #355:

Time to talk about Chapter 355: En Passant anniversary.
Time flies, but never did I expect that one year after posting the first chapter, we'd be 355 chapters in and still going. For all my series, I like to celebrate the anniversaries of their first chapter's upload date. However, En Passant Grandmaster is the first one that is still ongoing at the time of it's one-year anniversary. Thank you to everyone that's supported this series.

As for the chapter itself, I was deliberately planning for it to feature a game, but I didn't finalize said game until a few weeks ago. Once I knew that the one-year anniversary would occur during the Bermuda party, I knew what I was going to do, or so I thought. I had lots of ideas for this match, many of which I wanted to be in the story, such as Fifi participating, since the series' anniversary date, February 19th, is also her birthday, as well as Iori participating as well. However, I didn't want either to lose, so I decided to have them team up in head and hand chess, where one player calls out the name of the piece they want moved, and the other decides where to move said piece.

Next up, the game itself. I wanted an En Passant checkmate, because that's the only kind of game worthy of being showcased on the series' birthday. Getting it required a bit of work though, which was another reason I opted for the head and hand format, as I could get away with having top-level players walk themselves into an en passant checkmate. All that left was the opponents.

The original idea was for Jester and Nyoan to crash the party, but there were flaws with that, as Jester would naturally try to cheat, or end up playing so badly, it wouldn't seem as enjoyable. That was where Xiu and Ionuț come in. Fresh off her loss from Mimoko, Xiu was at the point where fans would likely be hating her, but knew of how good she was at the game. Then there was Ionuț whose character is all about being a snobby asshole. All in all, perfect candidates for getting en passant mated and humiliated.

The game here also has parallels to Chapter 1's game, notably the fact that the loser ends up falling into a body of liquid, though here both Xiu and Ionuț survive. But easily the perfect bookend is the fact that the final move of this game, hxg6#, is the very same move that wins the game in Chapter 1. And for even better parallels, the Chapter 1 game had 14 moves, while this one had 28. There was even an en passant from the enemy team, doubling the amount of en passants in the game. What more of a cinematic masterpiece could I ask for.

This was originally the point where the Bermuda party mini-arc would come to an end, but I liked the blueberry dunk tank so much, along with the opportunity to properly introduce some of the many characters I've uploaded team art of that I extended it 10-fold by about 20 or so chapters. Heck, I'm just now finalizing the final chapter total for the mini-arc, and needless to say, I really got the writing juices flowing.

And before I finish up, I'd like to mention that I've uploaded some artwork to commemorate the series' one-year anniversary to the gallery. Feel free to check it out. And if you feel like submitting fanart yourself, feel free to do so.

Once again, Happy one-year anniversary to this series, and Happy Birthday to Fifi as well. Whether you've been reading since last year, or just getting started now, thank you for all the support you've given this series. Here's to another year of En Passant Grandmaster.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #330:

Time to talk about Chapter 330: Everybody's fighting.
A bunch of new characters make their debut here, some were just inserted in as I just wanted to introduce some of the many characters in the team art that have yet to be introduced, but there was one character I've been wanting to introduce much earlier, but just now got the chance. But first, let's go over everyone else.

スラヴィツァ・マンチッチ (Slavica Mančić) is how Slavica's name would be spelled in katakana. Славица Манчић (Slavica Mančić) is how it would be spelled in Serbian (Cyrillic).

Her birthday is November 12th, which she shares with Serbian women's grandmaster, Anđelija Stojanović.

Her favorite piece is the queen, as she views herself as the queen of Serbia in a sense, due to being Serbia's first lady.

The Serbian women's team as a whole holds the record for having their team artwork revised the most out of all the teams. Sometimes it's just filling in a white patch to make the background look nicer, or other times it's actually redesigning characters. Slavica ended up being subjected to the later as her original design was far more punk-like, with her sporting piercings and a Chelsea cut. Perhaps the old design will play a role in her character though. One thing I will confirm about her is that she and Ognjen are siblings.

ヴラトカ・ユルコヴィッチ (Vlatka Jurkovič) is how Vlatka's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is March 22nd, which she shares with controversial Croatian jet setter, Vlataka Pokos.

Her favorite piece is the queen, for obvious reasons.

Vlatka was loosely inspired by Vlatka Pokos, though aside from sharing the same name, and both being controversial figures, the similarities end there. This Vlatka is far worse, and far more egotistical, not to mention she's now president of Croatia, which is now the most powerful office in the country thanks to her. Before I originally settled on the storyline for the Balkan nations, the plotlines for said nations were much different, and far more fashion industry oriented. Both Serbia's team and Croatia's team were to be comprised of models, with the Serbian team being more punk-inspired.

Croatia did have a bit more development though as Vlatka was originally set to be a jerkish fashion designer, who had control of the Croatian president from the shadows. Said plotline has obviously been revised, as now Vlatka is Croatia's head of state, and the fashion industry plotline is completely abandoned, but even back then, Vlatka was always meant to be more of an antagonistic character, unlike Slavica who at the time was just a glorified background character.

アナスタシア・オリニク (Anastasia Oliynyk) is how Anastasia's name would be spelled in katakana. Анастасія Олійник (Anastasia Oliynyk) is how her name would be spelled in Ukrainian.

Her birthday is August 30th, which she shares with Ukrainian grandmaster, Anna Ushenina.

Her favorite piece is the knight, because she likes horses.

Anastasia actually debuted back in Chapter 282: Chess' worldwide importance. I didn't choose to spotlight her back then though, as I felt she didn't quite stand out enough, and I thought I'd be giving her a moment with Alya soon anyway. Well, obviously that didn't happen for a while, but better late than never.

アリア・マザイエワ (Alya Mazayeva) is how Alya's name would be spelled in katakana. Аля Мазаева (Alya Mazayeva) is how her name would be spelled in Russian.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is May 6th, which was when the first novel of Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian was released.

Her favorite piece is the knight, because she likes horses.

Alya is a character I wanted to introduce much earlier. Her name is obviously inspired by Alya from Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian, but I feel that and the fact that she's Russian are all the similarities she has with that Alya. This Alya's storyline is a bit heavy as it deals with some touchy subjects. Essentially, when the war between Russia and Ukraine first broke out in this world, she remained silent as she felt voicing an opinion would upset both her Ukrainian and Russian friends. But the irony is, that caused a rift to form between her and her closest friend, Anastasia. And when the war ended the way it did in the story, things only got worse, as when Alya tried to reconcile with Anastasia, Anastasia took it as her trying to sweep all the atrocities that had taken place under the rug. And now, no matter what she says, Anastasia doesn't believe her, as from her point of view, Alya is insincere and just apologizing to try and get the channel back together. In her mind, Alya made her views clear by remaining silent on the matter.

It isn't like Alya didn't want to voice her support for Ukraine though. But Tsar Grigori's predecessor was quite relentless on dissenters, which led to Alya remaining silent, in hopes that things would end quickly and everything could return to normal. I guess "naive" is the best word to describe Alya, as she failed to realize how her remaining silent would be perceived by Anastasia. There is more to this plotline, but this chapter only gives a small glimpse into it, so I won't talk much more in depth about it again until more on it is revealed in the story. Alya and Anastasia won't become major side characters, but their storyline will definitely get more focus compared to some of the others within the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:330

    Feb 18, 2025

To celebrate the Chess Olympics arc, I've decided to create full artwork of all the major teams that will appear in the story. Each work of art contains not just full art of the team's members, but also their board number and rating along with the team's average rating. Here's links to all the team art currently up for teams that have been revealed thus far. More will be posted as the arc progresses.

The women's side is complete at 64 teams. Even though there are over 100 teams competing, I'm only choosing to spotlight 64 of the women's teams. As for the men's side, I plan to have about 34 teams.

Note that not all the countries that get a main focus will each have artwork of both their men's and women's teams.

    Chapter:259

    Author's Commentary #354:

Time to talk about Chapter 354: Halloween fun.
Of course it's another Halloween gambit chapter. You should all know by now the Halloween gambit is my favorite opening. And this time, Mimoko is getting mated by it and becoming all sticky and blue for the next day within the story.

One thing I will confirm about the game is that I played it against Chess.com's 3200-rated Maximum engine bot, with assisted mode on. It really did surprise me how fast it blundered, but it's not like I was upset, in fact I was thrilled as shorter, but still exciting games are the perfect type to write. Obviously, I'm willing to do a long game if it's worth it, but generally I prefer games that range anywhere from 15 to 35 moves, as I feel that length is just right for me not to feel too overwhelmed about writing the game. Even though a game might only have 30 moves, remember that each move is actually two moves, unless White wins or stalemates the game. Thus a 15 move game means I actually have to write around 30 moves.

And with that tidbit out of the way, the next chapter will mark the series' one-year anniversary. This chapter easily could have served as such a chapter though. Peter and Mimoko faced off, the Halloween gambit was played, and there was fanservice in the form of Mimoko being dunked in sticky blue blueberry juice. The fact that this isn't the chapter to celebrate the series' one-year anniversary, but the chapter preceding it, should tell you that the game next chapter will be even more amazing, especially since Iori will be playing. Get hyped, because this next game will be one of the more memorable ones in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
