Maribell's trust in her friends took a huge blow when she could finally hear their thoughts. It was more of a shell shock moment for her, one that leads to a panic in which 1) she clams up completely for fear of making it worse (because Cassandra didn't believe her due to jealousy) and 2) she makes completely nonsensical decisions because she's that backed into a wall. This is a set of traits that happen quite often for the real person I based Maribell off of.
As such, this vacuum of dwelling upon things by yourself (in a disillusioned state, no less) culminates to bad decisions that are easily misunderstood. Casting Vanidicus was a moment of weakness, when all she wanted was to hear Clive say that "everything was alright." That was what Maribell wanted, but the spell does not work that way. What Clive 'thought' Maribell wanted to hear was for one of her troubles to be removed (via getting rid of a witness). Hence, the misunderstandings snowballed into something ridiculous.
Maribell's personality is pretty bruised at this point. And not even a mutual understanding between old friends will solve that. But it is meant to be a step forward.
