I can see what you mean, it could have gone either way.
As a reader, I like this version because I want Koori to be happy.
And as a writer, I see the appeal of a plot twist, it would have a very strong impact on the reader. But I think that would need you to set it up from the earlier chapters and to go back and edit again, to foreshadow some of that darkness.
I suppose it depends what you think and how you feel, this option works for this Koori's arc as established from the start. You can do little changes and have her arc end differently as well. It would have definitely hurt to read and would have been tragic.
Do you like this choice or do you want to change? Because I understand why you would. I changed Kade's personality in Children of Mother Moon because he didn't work at first. Wrote 6 chapters and then started over. 😭
