Holy hell, this chapter was electric. The tension, the emotion, the divine chaos, it all built up to one of the most powerful and cathartic moments in the whole story so far.

The opening hit hard in such a quiet, heartbreaking way. Melissa’s exhaustion and emptiness were so raw, you could really feel the weight of everything she’s lost. The slow drip of water, the damp cell, it all painted this heavy, suffocating atmosphere. And then Hermes shows up, just appearing like a ghost out of nowhere. That whole exchange between them was incredible, so quiet and loaded, with that classic divine smugness wrapped in charm. His offer felt like this twisted sort of mercy, and Melissa’s struggle came through in every line. The wine scene was so vivid I swear I could taste it.

Then boom... Liviana’s screams echoing down the corridor. That shift in tone was brutal, but so well. It didn’t shy away from the horror, and it lit that fire in Melissa. And when she finally chooses... when she drinks and transforms into something beyond human, that scene gave me chills. The way you described her new form with the lightning, the black fur, the horns, the eyes, it was beautiful and terrifying. You could feel the power rippling off her. It was like watching divine wrath take form.

And the showdown with Saarkesh? So satisfying. After all his cruelty, watching Melissa just end him was pure justice. Her catching the sword with her bare hand? Straight-up cinematic. That moment’s going to live in my head rent-free.

But what really got me was how, even after everything, her first instinct was still compassion. That “Did they touch you?” It showed that she’s still her, still fighting for the people she loves, even as she becomes something way more powerful than any god.

This feels like a huge turning point. Melissa’s done running. She’s not a pawn anymore, she’s something new. You balanced the heartbreak, the rage, and the triumph perfectly.

Incredible work. This felt like the storm finally breaking and it was glorious.

The shift from Lucius’s divine encounter in the last chapter to Melissa and Liviana’s brutal reality is gut-wrenching but incredibly effective. You can really ‘feel’ the contrast: while Lucius is being offered power and temptation by a goddess, Melissa is enduring the raw cruelty of mortals. It makes their parallel struggles feel all the more tragic and compelling.

The opening scene was haunting, the image of Tagunel impaled in the center of the camp is seared into my mind. It’s such a powerful symbol of hopelessness, yet somehow, Melissa’s spirit refuses to break. Her defiance toward Saarkesh was perfect; even bloodied and chained, she still radiates that fierce strength we’ve seen since the beginning. I love that you showed her vulnerability alongside her resilience, her quiet guilt, her longing for Lucius, and that tiny bit of humor at the end (“I miss those fried cheese skewers...”) gave her so much humanity amidst the horror.

Saarkesh is absolutely ‘detestable’, which means he’s written perfectly. His sadism and pettiness make him a villain easy to hate, and the detail about the young soldier secretly giving them bread and water was a subtle but great touch, it adds a flicker of compassion in an otherwise oppressive setting.

And the reveal of ‘Shazar-Zul’… what a name! The description of the city, the black basalt, dark prayers, and eerie priests felt almost Lovecraftian. You really nailed the atmosphere: oppressive, ritualistic, and alive with dread. The idea that no one has ever returned from there raises the stakes so much higher.

By the end, despite all the pain and fear, Melissa’s determination shines through, and that final, weary whisper about fried cheese skewers broke my heart, it’s such a simple, human thing to miss in a place so inhuman.

Overall, this chapter was brutal, emotional, and beautifully written. Can’t wait (and also kind of dread!) to see what horrors await them in Shazar-Zul—and if Lucius will reach them in time. :honey_loveit: 💔
