This quiet, simmering tension is everything. You know, you have a deft hand with historical atmosphere, just like your worldbuilding, it never feels like a lecture or infodumpy.
The parallel between Yi-yun asking about the machine and her grandmother's flashback was done so well. It makes the past feel alive and directly connected to the present. And that scene in the tea house... I enjoyed. <3
The unspoken things here are louder than the dialogue. His reaction to her in the qipao, the way he bristles at his own title, that hurried, almost flustered exit after calling the tea "good"... I see you, sir. You are not fooling anyone.
You can see them both trying to maintain their roles, the stern officer, the poised tea master, while something entirely different is happening underneath. His discomfort with his own legend is interesting, I want to know more,
