I don't think I beat Harry Potter (book sales would definitely prove that if I ever publish) but I do agree that I bit off more than I could chew. But that was somewhat the point. I felt like too many "class" series do exactly what you suggest, shoving the supporting class into the background to focus on the "stars" and I wanted, at least, to focus on the other classmates in small ways. This story is going to be 20 books long, each as long as this (if not longer) so while most of them are certainly unnecessary in this one, they will (eventually) have roles to play.
